Hey - why not post your interesting query about police investigation in a new thread?

In my opinion, the investigation would be carried out by the Carabinieri at La Spezia. Vernazza or any of the other four towns at the Cinque Terre would be unable to handle the case. But, as Charles says, it would be better to start a new thread on the subject.

yes, that is correct, they might also involve the special scientific/forensic department of the Carabinieri R.I.S from probably Parma.

There is another commonly used abbreviaton for the scientific police (who I'm sure would get involved) - I'm pretty sure it begins with ER (which I think stands for esaminazione reperti, or esperti reperti), but I can't remember it exactly or track it down. Maybe someone else knows what I'm referring to. (These are different scientific police from the carabinieri ones who sebastiano has mentioned.)
Edit: This group of specialist police, part of the Polizia dello Stato, are called ERT. Stands for esperti ricerca tracce. I think they have only one headquarters, in Rome. They rush about at crime scenes wearing brightly coloured jackets with ERT writ large (pretending to be FBI perhaps!)
In addition, assuming the murder victim had a cellphone, the Polizia Postale would no doubt get involved in tracing last calls etc.
