And only yesterday it was reported on ANSA
MAFIA IN 'MAJOR' COCAINE BUST

Does Italy have enough prisons??? lol
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
It seems not from the various articles I am reading. However have a look at this absurd situation - An Italian prison is empty three years after being built because no road leads to it - Italian prison empty three years after being built because no road leads to it - Telegraph

It was probably the 'Ndrangheta who got the contract to build the prison in the first place - of course it has no decent road leading to it.
It's all part of the master plan! :laughs:

If the operations against the Mafia are so successful, they may have to build the road after all.....
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I'm trying so so hard to try to figure out why it is costing them two million euros yearly to run the place. ..... No road, so no - one there, not even a caretaker???

Why? - to bury the bodies?

Mafiosa Hangs Himself After Arrest - That's one less prison needed. lol
Cosa Nostra boss wanted to take charge of Palermo
(ANSA) - Palermo, December 17 - A mafioso committed suicide hours after his arrest in a police bust of almost 100 people suspected of trying to re-establish Cosa Nostra provincial 'commission'.

It looks as if national security forces are combining efforts and this is giving results. It has been announced that Paolo Pesce, a member of the Camorra and a fugitive for some 17 years has been finally apprehended in Fuengirola (Spain) by the combined forces of the Spanish Guardia Civil and the Italian Carabinieri. I wonder if he sleeps with fish?
It amazes me that the police don't go down to Puerto Banus to cast their nets and catch a few more big sharks. They are all over the place - and easy to spot for the most part. How much does it cost to have a blind eye turned?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I lived for 4 years in Puerto Banús, opposite the harbour, JC and I fully agree with you, they only had to do a minimal effort and they could catch quite a few. Also, they do not try to hide at all, fast Ferraris, designer suits, huge yachts, jewelry.... The local police always turned a blind eye. When I first realised what was going on I must confess that I was a bit scared, but then some locals told me not to worry, that it was the best protected area because these guys were paying fortunes so that there would be no trouble around them....

Aha! So you probably know some people that probably know some people that probably know me Gala!
Tell no one - admit nothing - deny everything!

It will be wise to follow your advice JC. It is dangerous to know too much. But this is a small world after all....

the thing with the criminal operations is that there are no end to them ... often people arrested quite happy to be so because they can get hospital treatment or want to retire... maybe just escape the hum drum life of a boss in the south... and for every one they put away there are many more waiting in the sidelines... much like any business its just a different way for fresh blood to arrive at a position of power....
what is to me slightly more hopeful and maybe even something positive is the clean out they are attempting at the political levels... Abruzzo being castigated...especially Pescara for what has gone on... but in fact being used as well i think to sweep through the old political caste system in a region where most probably they are not so well covered and organised as others...
there are two other areas coming under similar investigations, of course Naples and campania where both regional president and mayor are being urged once again to go... however have a feeling this time that maybe there will be some harder pushing done....and the other area is Basilica ta.... again regional politicians found to be corrupt...
the Campania investigation is now heading northwards as they pick up more trails of dirty money into the lazio region... basically from the same business man .. Romeo, il terremoto continua - ItaliaOggi
this is the man and his empire ROMEO, ITALIA – LA MAPPA DEL SUO IMPERO DA 48 MLD € - ROMA E NAPOLI LE PIAZZE PRINCIPALI – MIGLIAIA DI ALLOGGI POPOLARI A MILANO - 50mila azioni di Nomisma, centro studi BY Prodi - LA moglie Ha azionI di ‘Europa’, il giornale della Margherita…
that trail isn't surprising when you consider this man was already in trouble a fair while back ...and that brought out not so good things about the wife of Rutelli... what is more of interest here is that not only rutelli is an ex mayor of Rome... the present leader of the PD is the last ex mayor of the capital...
and this is from an intercept back in 2007... Scoppia a Napoli la bomba Romeo Tredici arresti. Coinvolti Pd-Pdl - ItaliaOggi
so if... and its a big if anything does get done this time with the political criminal side... then it will be to me a sign that at long last things might improve... because arresting criminals whose career is crime will not solve anything until they get rid of the criminals pretending to be politicians...
anyway the links if you can be bothered to read them... show a much more detailed view of political criminal life here and a bit of why nothing ever seems to get done... cause when you read the names they are running half the country... and basically its one of the reasons why i resist from the easy berlusconi bashing because talking about him is more or less the same as arresting mafia types...everyone knows...its all old news...
Here is something with more details:
