11217 New Zealand lamb

Greetings!
Last year I saw loads of New Zealand legs of lamb for sale near Christmas in some supermarket in southern Le Marche. They were 10 euros each, but I can't remember where that was. Can anyone help out?

Try the French groups such as Leclerc-Conad, Carrefour, Auchan. They seem to sell New Zealand lamb.

I have to say that one of the very few things that I have been VERY disappointed with here in Italy is lamb................my favourite meat by a long way.

A few lamb chops, potatoes etc in the UK are THE BEST meal for me. Having lamb here is almost a trades description offence !

No meat on the bone, completely lacking in taste, obviously a completely different animal!

Our local Sapore di Mare has frozen legs of NZ lamb for about €17. I know it's not the same as fresh but better than nothing!

I have ordered lamb for Christmas from our friend the very good lady butcher in our village Monte Vidon. Not sure what I will be getting Sprostoni but I have seen leg of lamb in her shop. You might like to give her a visit and see what she can do for you.? Her meat is excellent and local, but does come at a price.

Baby lamb (milk fed) is considered a delicacy; however, I find it sometimes a bit tasteless if it is not carefully cooked.
As for frozen leg of lamb, you can get excellent results by defrosting it in the fridge for 34-36 hours, depending on size and fridge temperature, and then leaving it outside the fridge for 1 hour at least prior to cooking it to "age". I always make a few small slits on the surface of the leg with a very sharp knife and then I fill up those small holes with slivers of garlic and rosemary. Baste the leg of lamb frequently as you are roasting it with a mixture of lemon juice and white (or red) wine and it would be delicious. You can also roast it on a layer of sliced onions to keep it moist and to increase the flavour.
By the way, I saw a very nice leg of lamb at the Leclerc supermarket only a month ago for less than 10 euros!!!! These must be Christmas prices at 17 euros, almost double the amount!!!!
Butcher's prices is a different thing. You can easily pay 40-50 euros for a leg of lamb. I think that they would charge something like 15 euros a kilo.

Always thought NZ lamb was frozen after all it does travel a long way.

Thanks for your input. I found some good Italian whole legs of lamb at a reasonable price in Iper @ Val Vibrata today, and am calling it quits. Tastes pretty much the same to me: a dose of good olive oil, sea-salt & rosemary! Yum! I am so looking forward to Christmas! Auguri & have a Happy Time everybody!
