11231 speeding on autostrade...

I live in the US and just return from a trip to Florence Italy. I had no clue about the speed trap cameras on the autostrade and did a lot of driving on it, mostly being over the speed limit. I was in a rental car from avis. I am fearing that I am going to recive like 50+ fines from this and end up with like $30,000 or maybe more in speeding fines. Can anyone tell me what I should be expecting and what is the absolute worst that could happen to me if I just didnt pay the fines if they are like 30,000. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks...

The problem is it may be several months before you know if you have any tickets as the police will need to track you via the rental company, sometimes this can take 6 months. The fine for speeding varies on the amount above the limit, usually around 160 euro. If you were doing less than 10 km over the limit on an autostrada there usually isn't a problem.

If you don't pay the fees there isn't much they can do...unless you plan to return to Italy sometime in the future. This may create problems if they share info with rental companies and the customs police.

Don't post the same question in two different threads.

.

If you had a rental car and paid by credit card the rental company will pay your fines, plus a heavy debit for the admin - an unpaid parking fine of 30 euros ends up as 100+ euros once the car hire company has paid it off.

The rental company have your credit card number and will pay parking fines on the CAR. Speeding is a different matter as the DRIVER must be positively identified before any penalty can be applied. Unless you write and admit you were driving there will be no record of it on the database.

No, that's not true. Having been fined before for speeding in a rental car, I can assure you that, as you're a foreign driver, the company will pay the fine and you will have the option to 'contest it'. However, if you let someone else drive the car, you'll have committed an offence with respect to the hire car agreement unless they're also part of the hire agreement. Either way, you'll find that you're essentially guilty until proven innocent in this respect.

if you were speeding then pay up if they ask for it, if you were not speeding and they ask for it then contest it, face up to the consequence of your actions.thats my opinion anyhow,

The rental company has your card details and will apply any fines they receive on your car during the hire period. If you are worried about this close down your c/card account completely & open another one. The hire company will not be able to apply the fines to a closed account. I have had fines applied over a year after the car hire.

Seasons Bah-Hunbug to all!
