11232 Foreginer Speeding on autostrade, HELP...

I live in the US and just returned from a trip to Florence Italy. I had no clue about the speed trap cameras on the autostrade and did a lot of driving on it, mostly being over the speed limit. I was in a rental car from avis. I am fearing that I am going to recive like 50+ fines from this and end up with like $30,000 or maybe more in speeding fines. Can anyone tell me what I should be expecting and what is the absolute worst that could happen to me if I just didnt pay the fines if they are like 30,000. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks...

I would guess the bill would go to the hire car company. I also think the hire company has the right in their small print to charge your credit card if they do.

You can always ask the hire company for the photographs

I don't think this will happen, but if you want to play safe - you could cancel your credit card [tell them you've lost it] and ask for a new one - this should [I think] stop charges being levied on the old one.

However - what the heck were you doing speeding so much?

Hire companys DO forward any traffic fines to the person using the car at the time the infringement took place... and I have a feeling that if they are approached a second time for the same 'tickets' then they have the right to disclose your details as under the'Privacy Act' this can be done in cases where a crime has been committed!

The speed camera's are there for a purpose - and if anyone doesn't like paying the fine - then the solution is simple. Surely you are used to much lower speed limits 'back home' though? So how come so many tickets here? 50 + that IS a lot - I've been driving 50 years and I only ever got caught once!

If fines are issued, it is no use to cancel your credit card. You have to pay! And if it is a rented car, the rental company usually add a charge to the fine.

Bad luck, or plain stupidity? Speed limits are there for a reason!
