It's probably best if someone who has actually done the trip contacts you, but I did see this article in The Times online

There is some useful (ish) info about half way down the page.

My advice is to make sure you definately have the tickets/seat reservtions in advance.

Try looking at a thread started by Annec, entitled by train to Marche. Detailed description, might help Sal, or give you some ideas.

You can book online but the website is not the best (i.e. it never seems to find a seat in my experience) so you will be better off calling them.

If you book a fair while in advance you can get first class return for about £250 which is a good deal.

The website is: Rail Europe

some useful info here How to travel by train from London to Italy | Venice Florence Rome & other cities may help with your travel plans ciao marco

For sorting out the various train time options - use

.

The Italian railways seem to refuse a foreign credit card when trying to book online so if in Italy you most probably will have to use a travel agent or go to a large railway station unless they accept Paypal.
Friends say that they usually use Rail Europe - which is SNCF in English and tickets are bought in sterling - for journeys starting in Paris or Lille. They have a central London office which is good if you need to make sure of facing seats or similar. They have used Deutche Bahn, for trips in northern Europe but I'm sure they are fine for France and Italy too.
And other friends in England use the site ...The man in seat 61 for rail travel in Europe.

Thanks Tutti. Very much appreciated.

we've done it at least 5 times- using rail europe.

there's just the one train from Paris Bercy, leaves around 6.30pm but can be late leaving and arriving.

If you share a carriage its about £100 return 3 months in advance of travel.

Here's the link to Annec's thread that contains the document about her journey. (Very worthwhile reading.)

Friend of mine does it regularly. Eurostar to Paris and then to Bercy via metro and then the overnight sleeper to Rome. Personally I long for the good old days of the Calais-Rome motorail, now that WAS a train!
