11336 Uh-oh No Health Cover

I have realised that before coming to Italy I should have completed an E111 form. I haven't. I applied online but the web page says to apply two months prior to leaving. I've already been here for two months. Judging by the website I read I need to take proof of health cover to the Anagrafico to get the residenza e soggiorno. Is this correct?
I will pop along to the ASL this week and see what I can do. Has anyone been in this position?

Forgot to ask: in my current state what health benefits am I entitled to? I assume emergency medical treatment.

:wideeyed:

PS - bought a packet of 10 soluble aspirin plus Vit C pills yesterday at a local pharmacy and they cost €4.15 !! Shocked. A small pack of aspirin in ASDA is something like 20p !!

Hi

Are you sure its an E111, if you have left the UK then I think you should look at an E106. Contact the Dept. of Work and Pensions.

Things have changed in the last two years but you will need to present a completed/stamped E106 to USL (health office) to get a health card (looks like a credit/driving licence card) to show that you are eligible for cover. Can you not apply 'retrospectively..... using a UK address...

You're right, it was E106. I applied for the EHIC online. I'll call them and see what happens.

Thanks!
Tony

Apparently your local pharmacist is likely to be the richest person in the town/village where you live. Friends post us such things or you can buy them online. (See a previous thread think Geotherm made a recommendation?)
If you are unfortunate enough to need medical assistance, fear not. In my experience Italians will offer help and hospitalisation too, if necessary. The 2 posts above are correct but if you choose to use an E111 and not register formally with the Health Service here, then the Italians always get round the problem of the E111 somehow. Once you have registered online there will be a record of your doing so in the UK so by the time the Italians get their paper work in order all will be fine.

The above post is right in our experience, you'll always get the medical care you need with no need for payment.

However you will likely need the E106 to gain residency, but as we know, every commune is different

Tony - when I was first in italy for study my friends and I had to call the guardia medica one night (on-call GP). We had no E111 or residency but there was no problem. My husband works at the local hospital and always sees foreign tourists - he has never mentioned any bureaucratic problems. Also - yes, shocking prices in the farmacia. I always bring paracetamol with me when I go back to the UK!

When I had a minor accident two or three years ago the hospital only asked me for my passport and I sorted the documents out with USL later - needless to say I had the wrong ones and they didn't seem to have any idea what I should have:nah:. Anyway, Tony, I hope you don't have cause to need treatment and the paperwork goes smoothly
