I can 'guarantee' that Persephone's new avatar was an "Elegant Lady" at the time of my posting - but I reckon it's more likely to be a Cyber Sister now. (Cant catch me Persephone - I'm also known as the Witch!) :laughs:
My Avatar is simply (one of) the Coat(s) of Arms for Naples.

Looks like a dimly lit archway/tunnel with an underground lake - no idea of it's significance though. Clue please.

Getting warm! This ancient spot is located below a duomo in Le Marche and has a series of archways.

Are you a grey-beard loon, Lisa C?
No, I don’t wear thick glasses Carole, too late for that, I just can’t see very well, so I make lots of typing errors. Well that’s my excuse anyway!!
JC are you an aristo? Is that your coat of arms?
Carole when I see your avatar I think of the Hall of the Mountain King, or Frankenstein - it’s the bolt that does it.:laughs:

Mine is easy. It is a portrait of Aelia Galla Placidia as it appears in her mausoleum in Ravenna (my husband's grandfather was born in that city). In Spain she is known as Gala Placidia and she lived in this country during her first marriage. Her eldest son, Theodosius, died as a child in Barcelona. She was a devout Christian and loved pearls.... and so do I..... I do not look like her, though.

Its clear I am a pussy cat, Carole is trying to scare us, J&C are being regal,Geo loves his dog, and Lisa are they the thermal baths at Sarnarno?. And Charles if I may be so bold yours always reminds me of a bulldog...look closely, do do see what I mean?.

I had thought of myself as a "little acorn" who one day might become a mighty Quercia - a metaphor for my personal development in Italy. My recent howler (on Forum Characters) has made me re-visit this. I now see my avatar as a stupid little puppy nervously worrying about everything, given that I don't even know what year it is.:spinny:

Well - let's be honest here... my first thought when choosing it was:
"Forked lightning - forked tongue!"

But then I realised that the HUGE clap of thunder that accompanies forked lightning might wake some posters up and make them pay attention.
I regret to say it hasn't worked - YET!
Trouble is - I love lightning....

In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Ok, in the order in which they appear on the thread::wideeyed:
Carole B – like lightening, amazing to watch, sometimes comes out of nowhere, but quite scary if you get too close. Surname is undoubtedly BOLT.
Geotherm – woolly and warm, like the heating solutions, but probably needs a regular towelling down.
Lisa C – hints of the forbidden pleasures of the Orient.
JulianClary – delusions of royalty and like the drivers in Naples, doesn’t need to be given a green light (red and amber will suffice) before hurtling forwards into cyber traffic.
Nielo – dithering old fart on an endless wander. I seem to recall a previous Nielo Avatar of an old man in the woods with a pipe. Can’t be the same person though because that shouted wisdom, intelligence and possibly a cosy gathering with friends around a log fire with a hot mulled wine after a long dog walk on Boxing Day.
Gala Placidia – I’m getting hints of vegetable pakora crossed with an ill fitting hair net, nice pearls (of wisdom) though.
Angie and Robert – time for a new camera. If I was the cat I would sue my agent and demand a re-shoot.
Bunch – Needs to be heavily seasoned if to be at all palatable. Often only seen around Christmas and “completely mashed”.
Pilchard – a bit confused, a beer that thinks it’s a tin of fish. Either way, you are a great reminder of all that’s great about England.
Deborah and Ricky – too many mugs of PG Tips and not enough time spent loading the blooming lorry
Persephone – Elegant or course, beautiful, sophisticated and huge fun with a rapier like wit….but that all inevitably comes at high price.
The place wouldn't be the same without you.

Woolly and warm is the dog..... does need regular towelling down and washed paws though. It has decided that in the house is far better in the winter than outside.

Not a sewer, but you're definitely getting close and it does involve water. It is also not too far from your house!

Wrong, wrong, wrong - he/she/they/it (because frankly there's been too much gender speculation of late) is "snout to screen" all day and would need to be an octopus to play the piano as well. In fact Nielo, there's a suggestion for your January Avatar - Nieloctopussy. I have no idea what I mean by that by the way!

So it's not a Grotto (obvious now the larger photo has been posted) and it's not a drain or a sewer - so is it a cryptoporticus or an aquaduct?

I would never have got that! Not my area - ma sono una cosa magnifica!
Googling for information about the Cisterne I came across this site (linked below) - not that there is much information really about them, but what caught my attention was the midi music file played when opening the site.
Name that Tune! :laughs:
50 points for the song title and an extra 50 points for the artiste/s.

Not a clue as to the title of the song or artist but I can shed a little light about the cisterns. Going down a set of stairs, the Roman cisterns are composed of 30 intercommunicating chambers. Each one measures 9 m by 6 m and is 6 m high. Total surface area is 2000 m2 /21,528 sq ft. They were carved out in AD 40 - 60 to collect rain and spring waters to feed the public aqueduct for both the city and the port. Six of them are still in use by the municipal water board.

If I had Einstein as my avatar would you think I was clever?
If I had Worzel Gunnidhe or Aunt Sally would you think was stupid?
If I had a picture of the devil would you see me as evil?
If I had a little flower would you see me as innocent?
Or do you judge by the quality and content of my posts?
