And for those who do not have a good command of Italian the report is horrifying. The conditions under which the bread is baked, stored and delivered, the total lack of basic hygiene in handling food stuff, the ingredients used not only in bread but also other food products all controlled by the Camorra is an absolute nightmare. These products are generally sold from vans and you can be certain that it is generally the poor and the needy who buy this way. It would give enough information to have another "Gomorra" book written just on the manufacturing and commerce of food. It is a horrible, despicable exploitation of human beings and I just wish that someone could intervene to stop them. Meanwhile, they are poisoning thousands of innocent people who cannot afford buying food essentials in any other way.
"Give us this day our daily bread" and we should add "and protect us from the one produced by the Camorra".

I've only just stumbled on this one and it defies belief. Probably just the tip of the ice-berg too. All the more reason to buy from known local sources (assumes transport and soldi are available).
I cannot pretend to understand to what it must be like to live in the midst of the Mafia, but assume its existence must contribute to the culture of appathy, mBUH, and anonymous filing of denucie left, right and centre that you encounter, certainly in this part of Italy.

I think it is just plain fear and terror. Very few would dare to do anything.... and pay the terrible consequences. The book and the film "Gomorra" depict all this very well.

Thanks Juliancoll, I had hoped that you would come back on this one and give us a bit more insight.
As far what you said in the paragraph below, from my expereince around Lunigiana, you could say pretty much the same of the locals here. Big shame, but I think it stops them getting stressed. I seem to be the only one in the village who is prepared to take on authority or challenge crass behaviour - but I guess even I'll get worn down and blend in one day!
"Neapolitans are inherently lazy and happily follow each other like grazing sheep - they rise up against pettiness just because it releases social tension or it's stormy weather - rather than accept they are the cause of many of their own problems. They don't think any of this is their responsibility and just want to ignore everything where some effort is required to change things. They know in order to change the "system" they must first change themselves. That sounds too much like hard work for the vast majority of Neapolitans. "
Cheers
I am still under shock! And the victims are the poorest people in the outskirts of Naples as they would be the ones buying contaminated bread from those vans and not from proper bakeries which would comply with health regulations. An awful report but thank you JC for bringing it forward.
