Thank you. Some compelling film footage too.
Prompted by the video I have scoured the internet for more, but I am no closer to understanding the dialect...
...but the tune will be in my head for rest of the day.

Wow - powerful stuff Juliancoll, music and video. Quite a distance from Dean Martin. Like Persephone, I've snooped around and found another more mainstream version from teresa de sio e raiz, but prefer yours. Also found a dreadful version that sounded like a cross between the dubliners and boney M.
Couldn't find out what tammurriata means though.
Keep the music links coming everyone - it's great to listening to stuff that comes recommended as opposed to random surfing of utube.

I have never heard either the song or the singer - but this, for me, was nine minutes of joy, pain, awe and humility... I have always enjoyed music/song from that area - Sergio Bruni being one of my favourites... But this man is utterly incredible - thank you so much 'jc' for sharing it with us.
I did manage to find this tiny item on 'tammurriata', which I have translated (correctly I hope...) for you.

For those who don't read Italian - it says of the Tammurriata: 'a dance with origins in the areas of Vesuvius and nocerino-sarnese that really approaches many of the ecstatic/fervent dances of the middle-east'
How many have never realsied the pain, hunger and fear of those traumatic times during WW2? And then to have Vesuvius erupt on top of everything else was, as seen in the film, horrific... you can read a little more about that here if you wish.

Thank you again Carole, I thought it definitely had some middle-eastern influence but I was not quite sure. Your post confirms it.

Didn't mean to keep you up late digging out this one, but just wanted to say that i really enjoyed Lina Sastri - takes me back to my Gipsy roots.:winki:
And if we could ship the two women dancing in your other link into our piazza for a master class they would be very welcome to come round for a cup of tea afterwards.
On the strength of these last few, please keep the music posts coming Juliancoll

Great thread - fabulous music, singing and dancing... Thank you!
But each region of Italy has it's own soul in it's music - but they are so very different.
I adore the folk songs of Milano and the Val Padana, plus of course those from 'polenta land' in the alps... all different from those further south but all with something to offer. Go have a look at Giorgo Gaber on the Lombardia forum, and of course there's Adriano Celentano - even though the son of Pugliesi, born in Milano (in Via Gluck).

Thank you for this, JC. A marvellous actress and singer. She is all expression. Just the movement of her hands is conveying messages. And the "Tamurriata Nera" is daunting. It goes straight to your heart. And I am not Neapolitan!!!!

Wow, what a performance. I bet Neoplitans don't get stiff necks with all that movement. And her mouth - whenever i talk a lot of Italian (badly) in a day, my whole jaw aches afterwards simply because of the need to move and open my mouth more than when speaking English (tight lip and all).
A most moving and daunting son with images that force us to remember that all this pain and suffering happened not too long ago.
