Wasn't that about the time of the infamous "Illegal Toilet" thread?
Actually, it was just an invasion of Web Spiders.

No, I don't buy the spiders - they might show up as 'guests', but never members!

Two theories:
1) There was a lot of forum hype around that day on the "Summer School on Particle Physics" organised by The Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics in Trieste:SLEEP:
2) to follow

Could have been that modest and retiring member Lombardia 2007, and his advice on driving…..or Ronald ticking the wrong boxes?

It wasnt members or guests that showed up - it was "users" - and trust me, 419 of them were spiders. The other one was Sally, because everyone else was at the beach on a picnic.

Oh right, sorry - I didn't clock that it was 'users' being counted! Spiders they were, or bots.

Probably a forum upgrade the day before...

But to a prospective advertiser 420 looks more appealing:bigergrin:

I am mortified. 7,195 is so much more desperately optimistic than my meagre 5,440. I got that figure from the 'member's list' - where did you get your 7,195?

From the horses mouth - bottom of the front page.

That's very strange indeed Charles - Maybe J+C's figures are from the Index page and these probably include deactivated accounts!!! lol The Admin must be very busy then!!! lol

Well, all I did was click on the 'Members List' on the top line, and that promised me 5,440 members. I completely agree with those members who are referencing a different number (at the bottom of the page) which claims 7,195. You takes your choice as to which of these two fantasy numbers you wish to believe...!!

I think that there is a large number of members who register as such but who will never post. They sign because that gives them the chance to look at everything. They think that they are going to participate in the future.... and they never do...

Hilarious, that last bit, it just so happens that achille82, was our latest Mr Spammer.
I've always said QUANTITY is more important than QUALITY on the forum...:no::no:

I have noticed over time that spammers posts are removed but often they remain on the members list. It’s a good way to beef up the numbers and impress people wishing to advertise.
It is possible to run a ‘prune’ which removes inactive members, say someone who registered in 2005 and hasn’t ever posted. Or accounts which have been inactive for more than two years. This would give a much better representation of the actual membership but would be far less impressive.
If you want to know how many active users there are you only have to look at poll results. Even if only 10% of users respond to the poll (using the poll ‘why do you use this forum?’ which is a sticky in the general section and has been running since 03-12-07 and has had 147 votes) I would estimate the active membership at around 1,470 but that is over the period of more than a year, so at any time there is likely to be an even smaller number of active members.
Some times it seem like there are very few indeed!:laughs:

Would also be a good idea to delete the spam thread as well at the time, as it doesn't really serve any purpose as you cannot see the content anyway!!!
