I think that JC is going to complain, because Mario Lanza was not born in the region, but I still think that his version of "Core' ngrato" is one of the most beautiful ever. There is another one I quite like by a Russian baritone. Anyway, here is Lanza:

Not Neapolitan, but Tuscan (I know I am hijacking, my apologies) and not available through shops anymore, but there are some copies still being sold. It is a collection of 2 CDs called "Firenze Antologia della Canzone Fiorentina" - Popular Florentine & Tuscan Songs" a collection worth having:

Ay! and if you look at the faces in the audience staring back in wonder at Caruso you can see there is not a dry moustache in the house:bigergrin:
I could forgive you Gala if you had perhaps used Beniamino Gigli as a comparison - but to place Lanza - in a thread with the Great Caruso.. is nothing less than sacrilege!! :swoon: :laughs:
Listen to this - close your eyes - and you will feel the pain and the passion. It gives me goosebumps. :wideeyed:
Catari, Catari, pecche me dici sti parole amare
pecche me parle e'o core me turmiente, Catari?
Nun te scurda ca t'aggio date'o core. Catari, nun te scurda!
Catari, Catari, che vene a dicere stu parla ca me da spaseme?
Tu nun'nce pienze a stu dulore mio, tu nun'nce pienze, tu nun te ne cure.
Core, core 'ngrato, t'aie pigliato'a vita mia,
tutt'e passato e nun'nce pienze chiu..

I'm with you JC. Thirty lashes for Gala!:nah: Thanks for sharing the recording. I think I need to pick up some of Caruso's cd's as I unfortunately don't own any.
Only 30 lashes?
Here's a (poor) translation for you. I think it's about 95% correct, but it's difficult to translate songs (especially from Neapolitan dialect) into English without losing the depth - anyway, I'm sure you'll "get the jist". :winki:
Catari, Catari, why are you telling me/saying - these bitter words - to me;
why when you speak to me does my heart torment me Catari?
Don't forget I gave you my heart, Catari, don't forget!
Catari, Catari how are you saying such things to make me suffer.
You don't think about my pain, you don't think of this, you don't care
Heart, ungrateful heart, you have destroyed my life,
everything is past and you don't care anymore.
I have to admit, my initial reaction was burn her on the stake!:winki:
Thanks for the translation I had understood most of it but initially thought pecche was a typo, but then realized it must have been slang.
Slang! Slang? Neapolitan is not slang!!
Off with your head Madam! My guillotine awaits.
Oooops! Mia culpa, I meant to say dialect!

Sorry, sorry, I´ll accept the punishment. I was not very keen on checking this version of Caruso as I have come across some which have a very poor sound quality, but this is quite a good one. I still like Lanza's version, or Pavarotti's.... I do not like the ones by Carreras or Domingo.
One question, JC, when speaking Neapolitan the s is sibate, just like a hissing sound, particularly before a "t" or "c"?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
More like a soft "sh" in conjunction with other letters, particularly vowels, JC, but in the two other cases you would be right.

I think I know what you mean Gala...
Like when you say 'questa' it comes out sounding like 'QUESHTA' (or even just 'SHTA') and 'scurda' becomes 'SHCURDA'.
But Ifind (feel) the 'southern' dialects are far 'softer' than the northern ones which are often based on teutonic and scandinavian tongues and are therefore much easier on the ear.
While I like (and enjoy) Milanese, it is in no way as romantic on the ear, or the heart as Napulitane....
(Do you think I might manage to avoid that now???)

Oh I do like that second one.... I could listen to that voice and dialect with no problem at all - apart from not understanding some of it....
Well, he is a very fine Tenor, but he's Sicilian - so he cant sing Neapolitan - no one can - except Neapolitans.
Compare this recording by Enrico Caruso from 1907 with the one by Di Stefano some 50 or 60 years later and you will see what I mean.

JC, thanks for those links. Neapolitan or not, not too many would stand up to Caruso! Just as an aside, my grandmother's sister was at the last performance he gave at the Met.
