I totally agree with JC, it is better to stay in Naples although there are some hotels in Pompei. Most hotels in Naples have day trips on offer from several tour operators. If you have not visited Pompei before it may be the best solution. The first time we visited Pompei we went on an organised tour and the guide was great. Since then, we go on our own and we have always driven; however, I think that next time we are going to take the train for a change.

Thanks for the info, very reassuring.
Juliancoll, we are literally going to fly in at mid day and then leave the following evening so just one night and a full day to see the sights.
We don't need anything flash, just clean, easy to get to and good value. Perhaps near Piazza Garibaldi so that we can have easy access to the station etc. What is this area like?
Also we will need to hire a car when we leave so can you recommend where would be best the best area to pick this up - don't really want to have a heart attack driving round naples!!
Failing that perhaps we could avail ourselves of your services as guide, driver and general factotum! :winki:
Thanks very much for your help.
Jackie

Jackie I was in Naples for less than a day, so I know that the area around the station is incredibly noisy with the traffic so much so I hopped on the metro for a few stops to the famous bay. Maybe there are nice little hotels there and I'm sure J+C will be able to tell you if there are.

During a recent trip to Italy, we flew in and out of Naples. We only stayed one day at each end of the trip and on the last day we wanted to be near the Central Station. We stayed at the Hotel Cavour which is right in Piazza Garibaldi and only a short walk to the trains.
The hotel was great - spacious rooms and very clean (get one at the back of the hotel, away from the noise), the staff were really helpful. It has a restaurant and breakfast is included in the room rate, which if I recall was around €100/night.
Piazza Garibaldi is a very busy place with lots of street vendors, crazy traffic and "interesting" characters :laughs:
Enjoy your trip!!

There is a Charming little hotel, called The Charming, right outside the Airport parking lot and it is very reasonable and they offer trips to Pompeii. You can also take the orange bus right down to the Garibaldi. It is very dangerous down there so keep an eye on your wallet.
Do you happen to be retired American Military?
Ciao, Dan

A possibility is to stay at Herculaneum - better preserved than Pompei, and from there you are also close to Pompei and there's an easy route to the top of Vesuvius.

Jackie - there is nothing wrong with flying into or staying in Naples. Of course, it's got it's fair share of problems and there are certain areas that if you were to visit, you would not like what you saw - but - how likely is it that you would find yourself those areas anyway? The areas with the problems are not the main central tourist areas and so, you have very little to worry about. Just use common sense - as you would in any large city.
Naples is a joy - fabulous architecture, museums, churches, energetic street life - you can fnd whatever you want in Naples and if it doesn't inspire you and touch your soul - then you must be dead!
There are zillions of hotels in Napoli, but I'd need to know a bit more about your plans to give you some ideas about where to stay. What's the budget, how long would you be staying, what would you like to see?
To get to Pompei, you need to take the Circumvesuviana train from the central train station in Piazza Garibaldi. The journey takes about 30 minutes and you need to get off at Pompei Scavi station, then just follow the signs to the ruins - it's not far - just a few minutes walk. I don't know when you're planning to travel but if it's hot, take a hat (and a fan) as it can get very hot in Pompei and the heat reflects back up at you off the stone roads. I'm serious - it gets very hot there and it will exhaust you.
You will have some of the most fantastic views of Vesuvio and the Bay of Naples on the Circumvesuviana train journey and the trip is worthwhile for that alone. It's not expensive - I think tickets are about 10 euros.
Don't dismiss staying in Naples - you will enjoy everything she offers - and I think it's pointless to stay in a hotel in Pompei - because it's quite boring. Anyway, just let me know your requirements and I'll try to help if I can.
Do you need a guide? I'm available!
