I think that JC is going to complain, because Mario Lanza was not born in the region, but I still think that his version of "Core' ngrato" is one of the most beautiful ever. There is another one I quite like by a Russian baritone. Anyway, here is Lanza:

Thanks for the translation I had understood most of it but initially thought pecche was a typo, but then realized it must have been slang.

Sorry, sorry, I´ll accept the punishment. I was not very keen on checking this version of Caruso as I have come across some which have a very poor sound quality, but this is quite a good one. I still like Lanza's version, or Pavarotti's.... I do not like the ones by Carreras or Domingo.
One question, JC, when speaking Neapolitan the s is sibate, just like a hissing sound, particularly before a "t" or "c"?

More like a soft "sh" in conjunction with other letters, particularly vowels, JC, but in the two other cases you would be right.

I think I know what you mean Gala...
Like when you say [I]'questa'[/I] it comes out sounding like [I]'QUESHTA' [/I](or even just 'SHTA') and [I]'scurda' [/I]becomes[I] 'SHCURDA'.
[/I]But Ifind (feel) the 'southern' dialects are far 'softer' than the northern ones which are often based on teutonic and scandinavian tongues and are therefore much easier on the ear.
While I like (and enjoy) Milanese, it is in no way as romantic on the ear, or the heart as Napulitane....

Oh I do like that second one.... I could listen to that voice and dialect with no problem at all - apart from not understanding some of it....

JC, thanks for those links. Neapolitan or not, not too many would stand up to Caruso! Just as an aside, my grandmother's sister was at the last performance he gave at the Met. :sad:
