Actually, possibly an unpopular view, but I think it would be nice if new members contributed more to the forum, without their first post being an advertisment.

Good point Angie

Perhaps if the forum is more welcoming people will join in more and realise that there is a lot more to the forum than just a place to drop the odd advert.
Also it is quite difficult to introduce yourself as a brand new member, who is perhaps not familiar with forum protocols, without mentioning what you do.
Granted there are links in Lisets post but also a bit of background about the family.
I get as fed up as anyone about the advertising here, but sometimes it is better to cut a newbie a break in the hope that they become a useful contributor.
Don’t worry Liset, Sally doesn’t actually live here in Abruzzo and nor do Angry and Robert. Just ignore them, it is a typical welcome from this forum!!

Hi Liset.
As my interest is Geothermal Heating and your husband is an engineer in multiple fields according to your initial post, I unfortunately could not find any information on what projects etc you are doing. The links from the web pages do not work very well and only promote solar. Are you still trying to set up the site?
hm, perhaps a good point - but..

My intentions were not really to advertise anything and if it came across like that I'm sorry.
I sit most of my working day in front of my PC at home, and so thought would be really nice to meet new people (foreigners like myself) vitually or in real life. I am member of the danish/italian community which also has a very nice forum on italy (but all the members are living quite far away) and then I enjoy doing websites - they tell about me, my work, my family etc. - however, still need to do one for my children...
I also do se a lot of hopeful house seekers coming here to Loreto looking for their dream house and running into all sorts of problems - not that I think I myself would be able to help, but -if asked- I do think I could give a hint or two when it comes to the Abruzzo-region.
With regards to translations I DO NOT translate into English, only from English and Italian INTO Danish (a matter of quality and local clients are not prepared to pay my prices anyway), but whoever in here should need a reliable EN-IT translator will be able to make a search on the AITI association's website: AITI - Associazione Italiana Traduttori e Interpreti.
Ciao
Liset

Dear Geotherm,
I had a look at your website out of natural interest, my compliments.
Is business going well?
I only linked to my husband's consultancy website for the photograph of our PV-array.
The site is not finished (argh, too many things to do). I did not link to the company website because I thought it would be inappropriate to pubblicate in this forum, but I'd be happy to continue this conversation in private.

Hi Liset and welcome to the Forum! I am not in your area but I am certain that you will find other members who live permanently or spend long periods of time there. Before I retired, I used to be a professional translator and interpreter and I had my own translating/interpreting agency giving employment to many colleagues. It was a great profession for a mother with a young family, as I was able to choose my own working hours although I must add that having to meet certain deadlines was sometimes a bit of a problem.
I wish you all the best with your projects and I am sure that we all look forward to hearing from you.

I think good quality bacon is the only thing I miss about the UK obviously apart from Tea Bags. Bacon without a cup of tea is nothing.

Hi Liset
Welcome to the forum. It is very informative especially to newbies to Italy like me. I have a house in Picinisco which is on the edge of the Abruzzo National Park, nearest big town being Cassino. Ron and I have had it for two years now and spend as much time as possible there (Ron was there six months last year) but hopefully we may be able to move over full time this year.
I used to live in Denmark 20 years ago (Karup, near Viborg in Jutland) and used to get my family to send over Danish bacon, as we British know it, from the UK. My boys used to go to boarding school in the UK so their suitcases were full of bacon each time they returned to Denmark. We could never buy it in rashers like we have in the UK. Our next door neighbour (1 km away) in Karup was a pig farmer and he got paid wholesale more per kilo for his pork than we bought the bacon for from the UK.
Once my business has sold in the UK we are moving over to Italy permanently where I intend to run glass making/glass art courses (residential as well as daily). I have a lot of interest already. My first time blowing glass was actually in Silkeborg and I have worked in glass ever since in various ways.
You never know, we may meet up one day.

Lazio or Abruzzo?

Hi Maralyn,
We have a new venture starting up in the spring and gathering information on different activities that may interest guests is high on our agenda. I read your comments on glass making and glass art and thought this could be of real interest to a good number of people.
Not knowing where Picinisco was, I used multimap to track your location and came up with Lazio and not Abruzzo. Is this correct or have I gone off course?
Thanks
Russ

P.S. For those in Italy really missing their bacon, try this. Buy some cheap speck (one that isn't too dry - the vacuum packed stuff) and slice thinly into "rashers". Fry as you would with bacon, but not for too long. It's not quite Danish Smoked, but if you're desparate, it makes a respectable substitute for a bacon sarnie!

Hi Russ
Picinisco is in the Parco Nationale d' Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. It is right in the triangle of these three regions.
Although I am a traditional stained glass artist designing and making large church, public building and private commissions, I am going to run courses in Venetian glass, Tiffany Glass, Kiln glass and glass jewellery making. I do have some commmissions to do in traditional glass in three churches local to me in Picinisco, and will continue to do this type of glass making for myself but obviously I have to think of people on the course returning to their respective countries with their artwork and leaded glass is not only heavy but usually large (and fragile).
I am quite excited about this as I adore working in glass art and also teaching so I will be in 7th heaven. Am thinking of doing it for about 6 months of the year although I have been asked if I would teach these various art forms locally.

Can anyone help point me in the direction for coarse fishing, cycling routes and designated routes for ramblers in the Teramo area? A new thread I think.

Bacon as a subject has been touched on before and i repaeat: do you remember when sainsburys was a shop/deli (ie. not a supermarket) and they had whole sides of PROPER bacon hanging generally streaky back bacon ie. SMOKED WITH RIND, not the Danish stuff which looks fantastic in it's box but is not smoked ,no rind and diminshes to a third of its size in the pan. well if you look around carefully go to the right shops you can get this bacon in italy without too much difficulty

Thank you for your comments.
I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about my forthcoming venture. With the economic situation right now in the UK I couldn't be selling my current glass & art business at a worse time. We had a buyer who had to pull out last minute due to family/economic problems so we have started the whole marketing thing again this year.
Whilst it is taking time to getting everything sorted over here in turn it is giving us lots of time for in depth research, plan building, lots of enquiring both in Italy and the UK and even doing dummy runs in what I intend to do (1st dummy run at the end of March - can't wait for it!).
But it will all happen when it happens, so we will have to be patient. I have to say though we are very happy working in our similar business here in the UK so it isn't exactly a hardship having to wait for the right buyer. (We did consider leaving it with a manager but decided that wouldn't work for various reasons).
Sorry Liset, I have hogged your thread.

Dear Maralyn, thank you for your story and all the best of luck with your business when you come to Italy. Your workshop may be a good idea for a trip out visiting some day, even though Abruzzo is quite big and getting round in all corners does take time on the mountain roads.

Dear Russ,
You will not find that routes are always well marked, and you may need to get hold of a trekking map from the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) of your area (you may also consider joining your local group Sezione CAI di TERAMO).
If you need ideas for trekking etc. CARSA has a range of booklets, but I don't know if they are translated: "Guida alle meraviglie sconosciute d'Abruzzo" and "Eremi d'Abruzzo", contains ie. the fortress of Civitella del Tronto, and a trip to the gorges of Salinello with the S'Angelo cave and it recommends the Martese forest for walking and mountain biking. There are indications to the most convenient car park and places to eat.
The "Eremi" can be an ok goal for walking trips, around Teramo, you find S.Angelo as mentioned above, S. Maria Scalena, S.Angelo in Volturino, S. Maria Maddalena (old church), also if you aren't interested in religious remains, they are all situated in nice surroundings.

Liset, the journey from your home to mine is one of sheer beauty so not a single moment would be wasted travelling. Not sure how far it is but look on Google maps for distance and time. I know Pescara is about 1.5 hours away but there is a new stretch of autostrada opening soon from Sora. (If not open already).
I will be announcing my arrival in Italy/start of my life doing the workshops to the world, not via an ad, just announcing loud and clear because I am so excited about the day this will happen. But the economic climate right now has really slowed everything up for us right now.
Watch this space!!!!

Hi Liset,.
I am also in Abruzzo, the Teramo region, but I know lots of other ‘foreigners’ in you area, including quite a few with school age children.
Often it is nice for the kids to meet up, especially if Italian is their second language and they are still settling into their new life.
There is a much friendlier local forum, where I’m sure you would be welcome.
