Hi Nielo, and thanks for the welcome. We started off in Venice, took a train to Rome, then train to Naples, ferry to Palermo, and train to Cefalu (which I enjoyed the most of the lot).

Welcome to the Forum, yzerfontein. We look forward to hearing more from you. Did you visit Tuscany? Otherwise put it on your list for the next trip.

Gala, thanks for the welcome. Unfortuanately didn't get out to Tuscany this time round....so much to see in such a short time, that we decided to try and see fewer places and spend more time where we did go.

Hi yzerfontein and a very warm welcome. I have visited Cape Town albeit for a day and in the days of apartheid. Which was your favourite part of Italy and why don't you upload some photos. You are able to do this under "Albums" on your personal profile page.

Thanks for the welcome...nice to hear from somebody who's been to my neck of the woods. I liked Cefalu the most - less running around necessary, as there are less sites, so more relaxing than the hustle and bustle of the big cities, and beautiful views from the top of the rock. A majestic feeling swimming in the mediterranean.
Yes, I will upload my photos sometime - I've also got a lot of them stored on a site I was working on while in Italy - London to Italy flights (part of the reason for going).

Hello yzerfontein and welcome to the Italy Magazine Forums,
thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I also have been to Cefalù and share your opinions.
Have you noticed something particular in Italy, that you've never found in other countries?
Cristiana

Cristiana, hi, and thanks for your welcome
The thing that struck me most about Italy is the deep sense of history that lies about there everywhere, and often coming with a religious slant to it. When I went to the UK I thought it had a deep sense of history to it, but Italy's often has a more ancient flavour. Of course mankind originated in Africa, and the rock paintings there were drawn before man set foot in Italy, but the examples of this are few and far between...whereas in Italy it's readily apparent almost wherever one goes.
Venice of course is remarkable and unique - a jewel and one of the modern wonders of the world.
It's not unique, but I'd also never climbed up an active Volcano before I went up Vesuvius.
Herculaneum is also unique - there cant be many examples of whole towns preserved by volcanic ash.

Actually Italy has got a large part of UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as Venice, Cinque Terre, Tivoli, Val di Noto and many others.
Re Cape Town, wish to let you all know that a new Italian film was set in there: "Ex" of Fausto Brizzi with the famous Italian actress Cristiana Capotondi, that you can watch in Italy from 6th February.
Enjoy new trips in Italy and let me know!
Cristiana

Wow, another South African - what an unexpected surprise  We were also in the UK before Italy (London). What was the highlight of your Italy trip?
