Mo Mowlam presented the case for Winston Churchill who was voted The Greatest Briton and Jeremy Clarkson presented a very good case for Brunel who came second.

Anyway, I thought we could do the same, but for Great Italians.

Put forward your candidate (and why) and then others can vote with the ‘thanks’ (‘Grazie’) button if they think it’s a good suggestion. At the end (of a non-specific period ), I will count up the thanks and we can have a poll (hurrah ) and vote for the top ten.

If you are passionate about more than one person, then post in separate instances (otherwise I can’t count the grazies). And in the event of a tie breaker (before the Great Poll), your arguments for the nomination will be taken into account.

A few suggestions to get you going:

Galileo, Leonardo da Vinci, Pavarotti, Dante, Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Bocelli, Berlusconi, Joey Tribbiani (oops he’s not real), Lola Lollobrigida.

Who's he Pass 55??? Intrigued by Persephone suggestion of Berlusconi!!!

Frederico Fellini -- film director

It might help to add their profession/role in society for the lesser known ones.

Sophia Loren  “Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”
And here is my supporting argument:

Frederico Fellini -- film director

Pier Paolo Pasolini - poet, intellectual, film director, and writer

And stick to one nomination per post as Persephone suggested:winki:

When do we ever stick to directions here??? lol Anyway I will do it the same way as Ricky above.

Ovidio - poet

Marchese Guglielmo Marconi - inventor

Pier Paolo Pasolini - poet, intellectual, film director, and writer

Galileo Galilei - physicist, mathematician, astronomer

Sally, I had not intended this to be a 'Google' race. Please can you allow others to have a say.

Michelangelo Renaissance painter and sculptor.

Cheeky girl!!! With due respect though you too suggested a few. And I didn't need to Google! as such. Just check spelling

Mine were illustrative suggestions to help the post get going. Not my nominations. Sorry everybody, if that was not clear. If anyone wants to nominate them, go ahead.

Sorry, Persephone, I did not see it on your list. But here are some who have not been nominated:

San Francesco d"Assisi
Amongst the great Renaissance and Baroque architects I cannot make up my mind: Brunelleschi, Borromini and Bernini
Marco Polo
Cristoforo Colombo
Americo Vespucci
Carlo III di Borbone, King of Naples. Sicily and Spain
Lorenzo de' Medici, Il Magnifico
Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, the real architect of Italy's unification.
Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery
Giacomo Puccini

I stop here

Gala read Persephones instructions again, one at a time only so people can grazie and a final poll can be set up by her dependant on the number of grazies each suggestion gets.

Sorry again, I was too fast in answering. I will go one by one.

One by one. Three people Gala. three posts. You are not having to decide on just one.

Slow down now as Pesre got a wee bit annoyed with me earlier!!! lol

Americo Vespucio or Vespucci, Florentine navigator and cartograopher after whom America was named

Sorry Sally..... and Persephone, but I started a list and I cannot leave it half way.

Carlo III di Borbone, King of Naples. Sicily and Spain

Lorenzo de' Medici, Il Magnifico

Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, the real architect of Italy's unification.

Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery

Giacomo Puccini, composer

This completes my previous list. I have some female names as well, but I will do that later.

Ah now that is interesting Gala. Now we know where we get the word "volts" perhaps.

Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti - composer

Leornardo Da Vinci - painter, sculptor
Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, the real architect of Italy's unification.

Gala,
I know this is going slightly off topic, but I don't agree with your comment on Count Cavour being the 'real architect of Italy's Unification'. The only thing Count Cavour acheived is giving up Nice and Savoy to France, jumping on the bandwagon and becoming Prime Minister and he couldn't even manage that properly (apart from the fact that he died young).

I would suggest Garibaldi and Mazzini were the only real people who wanted unification without any personal gain together with their followers.

Mia zia - cantankerous old crone.

La Mamma - for without her none of us our here (oh pooh, see post above) (acutally no, mine is more generally "the mother figure")

Valentino Rossi, World motorbike champion.

Valentino is my contemporary choice. I don't really watch sport on TV, but when the motorcycling is on I love to watch this young Italian. His passion, commitment and above all his sportsmanship. He is an Italian hero and a fantastic role model (and he is cute).

Pietro Ferrero - creator of Nutella (I wish I could vote for my own choice here!!!(

Antonio Carlucci - chef, restauranteur

It is a matter of opinion. To me, Cavour was the brains and the diplomat who created all the alliances which would help Italy's unification. That is why he was called "Il Tessitore" (the Weaver) as he managed to create a real helpful network. He was brilliant, determined and energetic. Without his input it would have been very difficult to achieve unification.

Sally Donaldson - 'na gran scocciatura! :laughs:

Blimey Sally, are you going for a record for the highest number of posts on one thread (18, I think so far). No wonder your total number of posts is in the umpteenth thousands. Nice to see someone with all that energy.

18??? Jeeps. Well yes, very occasionally I have these outbursts of "inspiration" and "bon camaraderie"!!!
