Recommendations for Nielo and others who want to eat well and enjoy Trieste.
Must book but loved, Menarosti via del Toro 12 Trieste tel 040661077 Speciality is fish so closed Sun night & all day Mon. Lily the owner is blonde and bubbly and a collector of bric brac so lots to look at whilst waiting for your food. Very popular, excellent food but not cheap. Drink the local Tocai wine. (Not to be confused with the Hungarian wine).
Cheapish and basic but genuino fish cuisine, Trattoria da Mario via Campo Marzio tel 040 305807. Packed with locals.
Two bars we liked in particular, San Marco via Cesar Battista 18 (art nouveau interior) & Bar via della Torrid which is at no 3. Of course you must have an aperitivo or coffee and pastry at the atmospheric, Caffe dei Specchi. At night the huge Piazza Unita, out infront is lit up and beautiful.
Must visit Museo Revoltella & Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Via Diaz. Open Wed to Mon 10am - 7 pm. Not to be missed is the Serbian Orthodox Church of San Spiridione.
The shops are just bliss too...........................
Nielo I haven't been to the Castle as we went when it was closed but my American Uncle went to wonderful dances there and remembers them with nostalgia. In truth we thought it was generally cheaper than here in Umbria. I was delighted to find second hand book shops and Junk-tique shops too. I am not sure at what time of year that terrible wind, the Borra hits Trieste though?
