11424 Residency requirements??

I thought all I needed to be granted residency in a sleepy central Italian town was proof of income and health cover. So off I go to the Anagrafe with copy of italian bank statement and EHIC and am turned away with my tail between my legs. The lady in the Comune says I must take out private health insurance or come back with an E form (E121, E106, one of those) but the post office doesnt seem to give those out anymore...she also seems to think that I wont get residency until I work in Italy!!!!!! I'm self-employed, not a pensioner, with the NHS...and totally confused! Any help greatly appreciated...

Hi Stranglepriests (love the name!) and welcome to the forum.

I can’t really help because it seems that every comune has different requirements for residency. I have ready many posts giving advice but each one is different. So sorry not to be more helpful but I wish you good luck and hope someone else will have an answer that fits your particular circumstances and commune.

From what I recall you need the things that you already have plus proof of health cover(possibly you will need to take out private health insurance) and a E form (E121, E106, one of those), and I thought at least something like 5,000 euros in a bank account ?

I thought I got my E106 from the Comune OR it was sent over from the UK by the NHS??

Good Luck

You need proof if income over 5016 euros if you're single (self certifiable) and health insurance. Cheapest policies are those with Italian companies for basic cover which you can get for 6 months. Although in theory the E forms are acceptable, here (Sicily) they wont take them and want only private health cover because they dont understand European law and cant translate the forms.

Head for the E106 - that's the one you need...

Thankyou All, I've found your replies very helpful and am sorting things out....very slowly of course! By the way I hope my name doesn't qualify me as a priest-hater...I happen to adore strozzapreti pasta and the English translation, well.....is funny! Like that time someone approached a lady friend of mine who was wearing a sheepskin coat and said 'I love your mutton'.....

May I come back to this one please just to make things clear in my mind. I have friends who are both over retirement age and are renting/staying with family until they find a suitable property. They are trying to obtain residency to enable them to also qualify for health cover, not having a permenant address should not be a bar to this...should it.?

Following my illness I was forced to stay with my neice in Milan for several months. (Jul-Dec) The house that I had bought was a wreck and work was going to take 9 - 10 months. So I had to get residency with the family in Milan.

The statutory visit was attempted by the vigile who left me a card telling me to phone him. He asked the normal questions - How many lived in the house? Did I have a room to myself? etc.etc. I got my residency in a couple of weeks. Then when I moved in Jan to be near to the house I changed my residency to Colico (another visit from the vigile). That stay lasted until I moved to my house on 1st May - then I got residency in my village (my third vigile visit).

I was a pensioner throughout this process, and as long as I had my PdS (and E121 to start with) I met their criteria and I had no problems.

Carole, thank you so much I think you have answered their question, I will pass your info on to them, when they have settled I think the first thing they should do is join the forum!.
