11841 Im trying to identify a mausoleom outside of Naples..Local help! please

Hello,
This would be geared towards someone who has lived in or around nNpales for many years. I am hoping somecan can help. I am trying to find the location of my grandfathers mausoleom. He lived & died in San Giovanni a Teduccio. He died in 1923 and his name is Federico Angeloni. My mother, who passed away a few years ago, was also born in San Giovanni a Teduccio. She was the only person who knew of the cementery. She visited his grave about 30 years ago. She took some pictures that I now have. As you can see the pictures don't offer much information, no name..just a visual of this place.

Can you kindly take a look at the pictures and tell me if you recognize the cemetery? Or if you can offer any recommendations as to who I can write to.. by email.

We will be passing through Naples in April and would love to visit his grave.

ps: If you can't zoom in the pic I can send another my email.

Thanks in advance to anyone out there for your help.

hi,i can confirm the existence of the cemetery of san giovanno a teduccio.as for the specific location of the mausoleum within the cemetery one would have to find it once there.

Yes Sebastian.. It is only the location (& name if available) that I am looking for. The location of the grave (mausoleum) would be easy once I get there. Yes if you could please help me with the location etc.. it would be greatly appreciated. Gerard

The area of Naples called San Giovanni a Teduccio is right next to an area I know very well indeed. The San Giovanni a Teduccio cemetary is a very, very small local cemetary and is on the road called "Via Cimitero" (obviously) which runs off the main road callled "Via delle Repubbliche Marinare".

I don't recognise anything from your photos as there is not enough detail, so I cant tell you if they are actually of this cemetary or not, but I hope this helps you.

Juliancoll..Thank you for your response. Ill check out the location you mentioned on google & when we get there. We will be taking a taxi when passing thru so hopefully Ill have one or two locations with me to check out. I really do appreciate your help. I took 2 of the pictures & enlarged them slightly hopefully showing alittle more detail..(see attached.) Maybe the picture taken from the street may help someone recognize it. Thank you Gerard

Hi, the problem is the photos are thirty years old, but even if they were more recent, I probably wouldn't be able to tell you if they are of the little cemetery I know of or not. We used to go to this area about 35 years ago to see friends and play together in the little park next to the cemetery.

All these little local cemeteries are more or less in the same style as the one in your photos. The entrances are all very similar - the way they are set out is almost identical to the next one a few hundred yards down the road - and of course, as time moves on - things get repaired - walls are rebuilt, entrance gates are changed - and sometimes - everything is exactly the same as it was thirty years ago.

Anyway, I've done a lot of searching for you and very little relevant info comes up, but I've Google mapped the cemetery so you can have a look at it in the link below. If you zoom in you may be able to pick out some details that match your photos.

Good luck.

Looking at juliancoll's google map, it is pretty clear that the entrance to the cemetery (pictured in Geronimo's post) is located on the Via Cimitero, close to the 'junction' (on the map) of Via Cimitero and Via Delle Repubbliche Marinare. You can see the big palm teee clearly, and the domed mausoleum in the background. This bit of the cemetery is clearly the earliest part. Good luck with your hunt!

I'd hazard a guess (based on Geronimo's pictures) that Federico will be found on the right hand side, shortly after you enter the cemetery through this gateway.

I agree with you, Charles, second from the bottom on first vertical row on the right hand side. You can read his name on two of the photographs.
I am sure that you will find him very easily.

I didn't want to get hopes up too high, but I'm sure this is the right cemetery - especially as you agree with the details seen Charles.

Just so you know exactly which part of the Google map image we are comparing with your photo Gerard - if you open the Google map image and zoom in to the very top right hand corner of the cemetery, you will see what Charles has already mentioned - the palm tree (looks very healthy after all these years!) - the domed mausoleum and even the shadow cast on the building of the cross which also is just about visible on the other mausoleum in your old photos.

Seems some things - thankfully - don't change in Italy, even after thrity years!

I hope that when you visit you will let us know how it went.

What a wonderful feeling. Juliancoll.. you played there, at the park next door, 35 yrs ago.. how cool is that! To be able to reach out to you nice people is wonferful...& finding the place, the town, where my mother was born,, & being able to visit her fathers burial place is very special to me. Im going to Italy the first week of April & will be passing by the cemetery during the 2nd week. Ill post some pics of the visit..WHAT!!!, of the cemetery:eeeek: ?? Yep. ~ Beleive it or not, I got my 7 yo daughter excited about stopping at the mausoleum...,,as long as we go up to Vesuvio right after. :winki:

I would certainly be interested to see some photos. I'm sure it will be an emotional visit for you. You may like to take a look at another thread in the Campania section on Naples - there is so much to see if you have the time and that thread may give you some ideas to make both you and your little daughter even more excited about your trip.

Enjoy!

I just want to say what a pleasure it has been to follow the progress of this thread - it shows what a great help people can be, and [to me] shows what the Forums should be all about.

.

I totally agree with Alan. Please, Geronimo, don't forget to tell us more about this very important experience for you and your child. I have taken my two daughters to cemeteries to visit family tombs since they were quite young and it has always been a positive experience as it has helped me to explain to them many things about family history. To know your roots is very important for everyone.

I hope Gerard returns to tell us about his trip. Should be just about the right time now.
