Thanks very much for all your advice! Yes, a few people have told me that august is not the time to be looking for work. It looks like I'll just have to bum around on some island for a bit longer (which shouldn't be too hard to do!)
I'll give those sites a go, although I don't speak Italian very well (am learning).

I was trying to get a balance between being realistic and not sounding totally negative and discouraging cos it's not that easy getting a job here. I did put on another thread that maybe you could consider doing a language course for a month - they'll probably help you get cheap accommodation and you can improve your language skills and hunt for a job at the same time. This all depends on your money situation though. I did that once and just chose the absolute cheapest course they had to make use of their accommodation service (a bit cheeky but it worked!). (Accommodation was pretty dire though).

Do you speak Italian? If you do you should be fine. If not that might be a bit more of a problem but something should come up in a large city. I don't live near enough to any big cities to work there but when I was looking for myself I came across quite a few jobs that required English speakers (always with Italian too though). Basically start trawling the internet doing searches on "lavoro", "lavori" etc - big recruitment sites like Monster have an Italian site ([url]www.monster.it[/url] I think). Agencies like Manpower, Adecco etc all exist here as well so trying looking up any that you know of in the UK and they can probably direct you to their Italian pages. Temping agencies in Italian are "agenzie interinale" so try searching on that too - also check out [url]www.paginegialle.it[/url] under that heading and you should get a few coming up. (If you do go and sign on with them they're pretty much like the UK - ie you have to keep hassling them and calling them to get anywhere) In Milan (possibly also in Rome) I know there are quite a few call centres that handle calls from the UK so obviously require fluent English speakers.
Also try the sites for the Italian papers as they have job sections. I used the paper La Nazione which had local jobs advertised - I think that it's in the whole of Italy but not entirely sure - it definitely has Florence jobs though.
Basically just keep searching and searching the internet and slowly but surely you'll begin to find all the job sites.
However you might find that this is not a great time of year to find a job - you're too late for the summer jobs and Italy (officewise) still does pretty much close down in August for the holidays. Therefore everyone's winding down at this time of year and not really hiring. September is like the start of a new work year so you may find that there are more jobs advertised then.
