667 Car Insurance and NCD

Hi All,
the ongoing "car insurance in Italy" issue...

Does anyone know a reliable way of getting an Italian insurer to recognise and accept UK no claims discount?

How about using uk Direct Line ncd evidence with Italian Direct Line...?

A friend of mine with 245 years driving experience and not even a collision with a moth can only get the equivelant of 3 years ncd...surely there is a way round this.

Anyone with a story to tell...please do tell!

 :(

TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE YEARS driving experience ?????? Wowwwww, seriously though, there was a thread I think in the Legal section about NCD with Direct Line, your own suggestion seems to be the way forward, BUT, remember, you are talking about Italy here, you can't change a system which hasn't worked for many years here just because it isn't England... (NO, it wasn't a mistake...)

I was previously insured with Direct Line in the UK and they helpfully supplied me with a letter verifying my NCB status which I used to get a Bonus-Malus rating of 2 with Direct Line Italia. The effect of that was to reduce our quoted premium from around €1,350 (which other companies had quoted) to €637 for TPF&T. Direct Line Italia were very helpful and offered support in English, though we didn't need it.
The Italian NCB system works this way; there are 18 steps. For each claim-free year you move up one step and for each claim you move down three, 18 being the worst you can reach. If you are a straniero, they will usually try to start you off at about 8, hence the higher quotations we initially received. The other companies quickly fell into line once we told them what Direct Line had quoted, but we stayed with Direct Line all the same.

often the problem with uk no claims discount with reference to the italian one is that it works on two different reference points....

in the uk you achieve a max say 65 % after five years and no accidents... if after this it carries on the same you continue with your percentage figure but not the number of years.... its just not recorded

when you try to transfer across to the italian system you are in general if you have stayed with the same insurance company then limited to five maybe six years into their system ... which as has been stated is generally for a normal mid range sort of person around bonus/ 8/9... take away 5 or six years with your proof of no claims with your uk insurer you end up at around the 2/3 bonus mark

you might well have been driving sinec before the combustion engine was invented but still the uk company will only quote the 5/6 years that it took you to reach the max level

a consideration to take well in advance of any car purchase ... either second hand or new is the size of the motor in the car you buy... and even with the best bonus/malus figures if you choose a car with a big engine you will find the insurance quotes streaming off into the stellar regions.... quicker than a warp drive.... so if you dont need a big engine dont bother.... the rates are dependant a lot on this and not on so much the uk system of stealability of the model and your level of competence...

everyone here also unless they have police declared road accidents... which in general they do their utmost to avoid will have after a few years a good b/m and will rarely report accidents or make claims because the insurance penalties if they do are just so high.... so in itlay recorded road accident statistics are near the worst in normal road europe.... but if you managed to ever work out the reallity and added in all those not reported you might well never go near a road again...

in a sense i think ... and this is my very own opinion here it could well be down to the realiabilty of various religous artifacts ...especially rosemares and crosses hanging from most italain car owners rear view mirrors... or the more closet ones pictures of saints in glove pockets....

when driving peacefully along...motorway or country lane... at slightly more than double the speed limit...you will almost be sure to notice on that part of the car behind attached somewhere in the closer regions of of your rear passengers spine that waving wildly from that central aforementioned rear view apparatus the crucifix form.... obviously italians not being stupid have worked out that brakes... looking at the road in front of you...no overtaking restrictions etc etc.... are all negated by that symbol bobbing around in the car and you can basically do what you like when you like with no fear.... and hence the complete disregard for all normal sane conventions as to wanting or not to kill yourself or someone else... you neednt worry... you have a saint on board...the latest i think being padre pio....

sometimes i wish they had a space on their insurance application forms so i could add in... st christopher...rosemary and padre pio... .et al... all carried in car.... bonus malus... hopefully a lot less

John, yet again, you have made an old man smile... and nod, sagely ????
now installing the St. Christopher rosary and crucifix in the dustiest Panda in Le Marche... :o
