In my opinion having received many many Italian CVs from people looking for work in my company, they don't tend to bother much. Most are lacking in basic presentation and I have only seen one CV so far where I would even consider reading let alone hiring the person.
Standard CV by email seems to consist of 1 line of text in the email saying "My CV is attached" (if they can be bothered to even say that) and then a poorly laid out and formated word doc or text file at best, which in my line of work (Web Design) is hardly going to make you any friends.
Sometimes I think they really don't want a job and are just sending out bad CVs to please there parents or something.
Stick to the UK way of doing CVs. 1/2 pages no more, use the same type face throughout give the most important info first i.e last job first or if no experience then qualifications first.
Write a short but friendly and courteous cover letter and if using snail mail use good quality paper.
As long as you make a little effort then you'll probably impress the pants out of most employers considering the competition.

Interesting post Sam. I've been looking at advice on Italian CV formats and what they suggest looks pretty boring with formazione before work experience, a separate section for Conoscenze Informatiche etc.
Whilst I'd always adapt a CV for the market they don't seem to have any section to summarise, such as an introductory profile, or a skills section.
I know you'd find a UK type format acceptable, but was wondering whether such a summary would be useful for Italian employers. I'll be looking for private teaching work but would also like to try and get local lettrice type posts in scuole or Instituti.
thanks
Sue

Well thank you very much.
You do not seem to have a very high opinion of Italians... we do write CV in a different format from English people, but that does not mean ours are less effective. When I first moved to the UK and was looking for a job I was sending out my CV and people could not find the information they required on it. Why? Because they were so stuck in their own ways that they could not see behind their nose.
Sorry for this email but yours was full of all the old English imperialistic attitude, we do it right and everybody else is wrong.
Soooooooooooooo short sighted.

Sorry if you took offence, your comment would be correct if it read "You do not seem to have a very high opinion of Italian CVs" as for Italians, I am engaged to one and moved to this country so I think I have a fairly high opinion of Italians in general.
I am also only going by what I have experienced with receiving at least one Italian CV a week for the past year. I'm sorry to say that when it comes to CV writing most italians have a lot to learn or have never been taught.
And I'm not talking about any strict layout definition as I don't really care about that but just the simple act of writing a cover letter / cover email and having some minimal presentation skills in word is all I ask.
Since almost 90% of the emailed CVs I get fail to even write more than 1 line of text (and more often than not nothing) in the email. and considering they have attached a file which for all I know could be virus infected, there not making a very good start and will more than likely get binned before even being read.
I don't feel I have particularly high expectations?
It's really a case of simple common sense, I'm not going to hire someone who has no common sense. So would you?

Sorry,
may be I was a bit aggressive as i had a lot of problems when i first moved to the Uk.
In Italy we do not usually write a cover letter. When you are asked to apply for a job you simply put your cv in an enevelope, some sample drawings if you are an architect like me, and that's about it. Then if you are lucky they call you for an interview, and if you are unlucky you will simply never hear from them again , so in that sense it is much better in the Uk as at least you receive a letter saying that you will not be given the chance of an interview.
I have to confess that I found it really hard to write my first cover letters, but I learned, with time and with the help of my fiance, who is Scottish.
And you are right in saying that in Italy nobody teaches you how to put together a cv or a cover letter. So if you are receiving cvs from young people that might be the case.
Maybe show them to your fiance, she might be able to read through the lines... and find out if the candidate has some common sense...

The really intresting question for me would be "what would an Italian employer make of an English styled CV and cover letter ?"
I converted my Cv to Italian in preperation of any potential oppertunities last year and it is in the english format, i always include a cover letter as well
Now would this put off an Italian employer ?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I do not think it would put them off, they might just not read it...
The problem with Italy at the monet is that our economy is doing really bad and it is difficult to find a job.
Can I ask you in which sector are you looking for a job?
Also, if you want me to I can read your cv and give you some help... possibly...
