Loreto and Penne

If you want to stay in Loreto, there is the Loreblick which is not too expensive (http://www.bedbreakfastloreblick.com) (or there's the castle which is very expensive). In Penne there is the Vestini which is OK too (www.hoteldeivestini.com).
If its medieval architecture and fabulous scenery you're after, then Penne is probably your place (there is also a nature reserve in a man made resevoir there). Try www.abruzzocitta.it or www.abruzzo2000.com for more info on these towns.
I hope this helps.

Probably too late to be of use, but beautiful places not too far from Roma are Tivoli, Villa Adriana, Pacentro, Campo Imperatore, Mandela, to name but a few.
Todi, 90 min from Ciampino

Todi is in the centre of Umbria, a beautiful medieval hilltop town surrounded by several others smaller but similarly picturesque. It's an easy drive from Ciampino around the GRA ring road to the exit for Florence/A1, then up the motorway as far as Orte then the E45 for the last 20 minutes. Very easy and foolproof drive! And there is quite a number of agriturismo places in the vicinity.
Hi, I suppose for painting Loreto would be very good centre as there are some very beautiful places around that area.Around PENNE,5KM away,Is some of the best scenery in Italy. Also 5KM away is PIANELLA another superb village followed by MUSCUFO From Rome Take the Autostrade to Pescara and exit at the SCAFA/ALANNO junction. About 1and1/2 Hours.
It really is a fantastic area, but I might be slightly biased.
There are B and Bs, Hotels or AGROTURISMOS at around 40 euros p.n. Shame you are on a short visit.
