Just make sure that when you go to SlowTrav that you not mention that you want to go here, here and there in less than two weeks, although it sounds like you're not. They can harp on you sometimes for doing too much at one time. They are an excellent source of information though. If you intend to stay in one place for at least three weeks then they'll be more receptive. They stress on people staying in Italy for a lengthy time so you can experience what life is like in Italy where you can know your neighbors enough so that they'll remember you when you return. I'm all for that if I had the money and time.

Oooopps, forgot about that Cynde, I do remember a series of replies to the more, shall we say "ambitious" plans of some visitors, LOL, "Is it possible to see everything in Rome, Venice, florence, Firenze and Sienna in one day, or should we allow an extra couple of hours ????.
My personal favourite was from a young lady wanting advice on how to fill in an afternoon in Venice as she'd intinerised ??? the whole of her two week stay, as she was on her honeymoon, I was VERY tempted to make the oddsuggestion, but, that normally gets you banned :D

I went to Italy just once and did it by escorted tour. Two weeks of hustling from Rome to Capri to Montecatini to Venice to Siena and back to Rome was great!! Though it was very fast it gave me enough to know which areas I wanted to go to the next time I go, which is every one of those places.
Slowtrav provided so much help to me, and Pauline, the person that put the site together, is such a kind person. I called her when I was in front of a Sorrento web cam so that she could capture the picture and put it on her site. She lives in Arizona so I almost hesitated calling her so early in the morning after our tour schedule got switched around at the last minute. I wasn't scheduled to be in front of the camera until two days later. But that was fun and it definitely made for an adventure. Although her site is fantastic I have my reservations about a few of the moderators there.
"... younger people, lots of entertainment and not a huge tourist spot ?
You have as much of a chance of finding what you are looking for as a snowball in hell has. In 2002 we were three weeks in Italia, visiting a number of places and we were unable to find 1) Italian beer (only imports were available) and 2) music for our entertainment. From that point of view Italia was dead in May 2002.

I think it depends on how old are you...
if I were 18 I would go to the Riviera Romagnola, that's where the party is, as I am 30 i would go to the historical cities... Palermo, Roma, napoli, Ferrara, Pisa, Firenze...Torino... so many different places.
Or sardinia for the seaside... and good party time...

Reminds me a few years ago of meeting a bunch of Japanese tourists on a mission to see Europe in seven days. At one point one of the tourists prodded and old guy in the ribs and shouted about Windsor Castle. The old guy opened one eye, pointed a camera and fell asleep again.

Do any of you have any advice on good vacationing spots with lots of accomodation, younger people, lots of entertainment and not a huge tourist spot ?
Personally i wouldn't try and see lots of places unless you have a lot of time.
i would choose in this order - TAORMINA in Sicily, the Eolian islands off Sicily,Capri and the Amalfi promontory off Naples but not all of these just one or two of these for one trip. All have great hotels, views, food, sea, and if you want also night life though they're not places for the v.young...too expensive.

much as people may run down tours and busses i have to confess that as a younger person i partook of these and now have a knowledge of europe and european citie thanks to that time.... i have to confess to driving for an australian company based in holland european camping/hotel tours for several years... so if i wanted to look around italy i might try someone like contiki ... an australian company that does this sort of thing... dont know if they do a speciality trip to italy but they might...what you get out of it is a cheap look around and then you make your choice about what you want to go back and see in more detail..... plus in general young clients if that is what you want..... so the courier/driver will be taking you to all the latest young people spots too.....
going to Italy in a few weeks

Hi all....Im going with a couple of friends for a week to Italy - I know you'll all say its not a long enough time....but work doesnt permit a longer stay right now. We made reservations for the entire week in Positano, but now think maybe we should stay in capri for at least a night, and since we are flying into Naples, stay there for a night or two.....What do you think? ANd what nights of the week are better where, specifically the weekend - is it better in the city, Naples....or in Capri??
Try www.slowtrav.com being American based, and advocating the type of travel you propose they should be able to fill a month or two of your time, although I think your spec. is contradictory...
Enjoy your visit.
