.....why not get it at the airport? It's not duty-free but tends to be tax free, so there's a 17.5% saving straight way!

....or try www.kelkoo.it; this is a search engine that takes prices from a variety of on-line stores and allows you to compare and contrast prices on one site.
I found the following prices via them http://it.kelkoo.com/ctl/do/search?siteSearchQuery=ipod&catId=100164013
You might want to consider other basic stuff like power sockets (do you want an Italian plug on it or will you use it mostly in the UK?) & warranties (is it easier to take it back to a UK store or an Italian store?). I suspect that the software will be multi-lungual.

Err, you can't get tax free or duty free between European countries, and haven;'t been able to for years. The shop *may* make a pretence of dropping the VAT but it really just means that they give you a 17.5% discount on an inflated price. If you shop around usually you can get the same goods elsewhere VAT paid for less.
There's no duty payable on an iPod anyway.
FWIW, there's little point trying to buy anything of this nature in Italy, they all cost more than in the UK, not least because IVA on these goods is 20%. My Italian friends tend to buy like crazy when they visit us in the UK and I get instruction before the visit to scout out the cheapest shops so they can spend, spend, spend as soon as they get from Heathrow to the shop.
The other headache being that an iPod sold in Italy will have Italian menus. Fine if that's what you want.
Hi cslogg
Not sure on Ipods specifically but to be honest I've always found electrical goods much more expensive in Italy as opposed to hear, though others may have differing experiences.
Anyway, what i'm trying to say is don't hold out too much hope on that score ! :)
