934 Transport Services

I am (was?) a freelance writer who was persuaded to start a small transport business specialising in private loads between the UK and Italy. I've been running this business for two years and have never had so much fun in my life! I've seen a bit of chat about transport in the Forums and it's clear this is a hazy area for many. I'd be happy to answer any questions - and I really do mean questions, as distinct from requests for quotations. Those would be welcome too, but: although I'm trying to keep the transport thing going as a part-time occupation, it has a tendency to take over my life!

Thank you for taking the time to offer to answer questions on this very important subject for many users of this forums.
I have many questions which I am sure others will ask, but I would be very interested to know the following:

What vehicle do you drive between UK and Italy and would you recommend it to those of us that prefer to drive our own loads?
I have hired different vehicles on different occasions but I have never found a vehicle which offers me a truly acceptable balance of comfort/fuel efficiency/load carrying ability/reliability/drivability/power etc.

Thanks

Does such a thing as the perfect vehicle exist? Over the years we have found as follows:

In winter I wouldn't use anything other than our four wheel drive. It's seen us through some serious blizzards and it can carry up to 750kg.

The rest of the year, these vans were all good:

Mercedes Vito
Mercedes Sprinter (king of the bunch on balance)
Renault Master

The Renault is too fragile if you are buying, but for rental it's good with comfortable seats, reasonable speed and good economy. But the Sprinter is better IMO.

Busy watching telly from RAI in a indow on my PC as I type. If Paola is reading, thanks again. Best URL posted here, ever IMO.
