983 mosquito killer

We have a problem with mozzies or some other things that leave itchy bites.
Does anyone know if the blue lights that are used in butchers shops to kill flies will work with mozzies?
Does anyone know where to buy one and the cost involvde?

Hi,

Outside we've been using large Citronella candles and these not only smell nice but seem to work 'cos we haven't seen hardly any yet in Puglia...are they still to come down here ?????

Indoors, we bought a VAP Magic ( plug in )in each room and that also seems to work...well...no bites anyway. Bought them in GS supermarket.

We also have a couple of those white things with blue interiors and sonic devises ( battery operated ) which also keep vermin and spiders out- none of them either .( Both bought in UK)

I know ...a bit OTT, but i get hysterical about creepy crawlies and hate mozzie bites

I'd recommend Vitamin B capsules; there's also loads of advice in http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=283

They are definitely there Lynn.

At the end of June, unusually I was eaten alive whilst Neal hardly got any. Usually its the other way arround.

I've also seen the 'blue things' in the local Brico & local hardware store.... best to start local, but I can't think what the 'blue thing' would be called
;0)

Would highly recommend vitamin B complex tabelts - I got this piece of advice from this website - took 1 pilla dya during my recent 2 week holiday to to italy and not one bite!

we have the blue light thing.... got it at the local ironmongers.... about e60 we payed...we also use the candles..... all the house has roller blind mosquito nets so its only outside we have the problem.....

have tried vitamin b but it didnt work ....for me that is....

suggest they might like the figs ..... maybe youll have to cut down becuse your blood has become too sweet..... or some people have said its the alcohol....but i refuse to be intimidated by a thing you can hardly see.... and continue in both practices

the best thing about the blue light is the loud zapping sound as they get fried
Italy would be perfect... if it wasnt for these ravenous beasties... hopefully they will soon be gone....

one thing at night...under trees is the worst place

and any lying water provides the breeding ground...especially if its stagnant...

It's another Agricolo moment John, go in, tell them your problem, have almost everyone from the surrounding area in to advise you what they prefer, sit down have a glass or two of wine (home produced of course) buy a big sack of dog food, a pair of those trousers which zip down to bermuda's, then shorts, get some viti (never know when you'll need them), ohh, and buy a zapppy thing, and some of that nice "Off" spray. LOL, at least that's how it went the week before last... :D

Thanks for replies
Locals don"t need to give me any advice because we don"t have mossies in our village!!
It must be an English thing because the only other brits around here also get slaughtered.
We live in Le Marche and this is supposed to be the new Tuscany-I can"t recall Sting singing any songs about the troubles he has with mossies so perhaps I"ll sell my house and buy his.In the long run, with the life -expectancy thing in Italy-it could be cheaper than the vitamin pills.
My partner is a vegeterian so I may have to turn down the volume on the blue thing if you can actually hear them being fried!

But thats the best thing about the blue thing - having a celebratory drink every time something gets 'zapped'.

Anyway - being a veggie isn't a problem - they are too small to eat when fried!

[Also - you can't turn them down]

Breeding non biting mosquito's for Brit. drinkers... Crikey, there could be a fortune to be made, WAIT....... instead of just buzzing, could we kinda programme the thing to play a tune of some sort.... different tunes for different species ???? the possibilities, ohhh.
I had a problem with the language here in regard to mosquitoes, locally they call the small, really irritating black flies something like Mosche?? I wish my language would miraculously improvewith out any effort on my behalf...

Yes they work, but beware of the blue light mossy killers, they don't have a good reputation for hygiene even though you see them in food preparation areas. They attract flies and mosquitoes and then blast them apart with a zap of electricity. Sadly this scatters insect guts with their load of bacteria over a wide area.

An alternative is the same technology combined with an electric fan to suck the insects into the "works" and then zap them. These work well and contain the spatter of bits. I've seen these on sale in Castorama, in a range of jazzy designer colours (well it is Italy and style is important). I think they cost about 60 to 80 Euro depending on which one you pick.

You can still get fly paper over here, you know the little cardboard tube with a length of glued paper, not incredibly effective though, and, no buzzing, you'd have to keep some sort of running count on the strip so's you knew when to take another drink, OR, set up a web cam or something...
