1018 Permesso di Soggiorno

Could anybody please clear up our query? We have been told that we need to obtain the 'Permesso di Soggiorno' (stay permit), prior to moving to Italy. Is this true - and if so where can we obtain one from and how long does the process normally take. We apparantly need to give a copy to our removal firm for Customs.

I responded on the other thread but just in case you look here and not there.

The PdiS can be obtained in Italy only and from the Questura. You will need copies of a lot of things as well as a tax stamp and proof of medical insurance and funds to support your stay. You must apply within 8 business days of arrival.

Most of the time it takes a couple of months (at least) to get back the actual PdiS but in the meantime you wil have your cedolino (receipt). Sometimes the customs people will allow this although not always. You may need them to rush it for you. If you need them to jump over hopops, make sure you are as nice as can be and understanding of their diffoculties. This helps, I know from experience.

This is probably a really silly question but do Italian citizens who have never lived in Italy also need to apply for this?

italian citizen not living in italy is enrolled on AIRE
and do not necessity of "permesso di soggiorno "
ONLY if have a Italian Passport

My family do have Italian passports, but have never lived in Italy (bar my sister, but she never applied for a permesso di soggiorno).

If so she doesn't need a PdiS but if she doesn't and she lived here and never got a PdiS then she was not legal.

She lived over there for nine months - most of it was spent around Rome, the balance near Naples. She was advised by the embassy here that a codice fiscale was not necessary and she never applied for one, and the permesso issue never even came up.
