1027 Moving to Italy from sunny Scotland

Hello there, I'm a new Forum member, an avid reader of Italy magazine and lover of all things Italian. My husband is about to take early retirement from teaching Russian at Glasgow University, and our plan is to move to Emilia Romagna. We've already fallen in love with beautiful Bologna, but plan to check out the other smaller towns in the area, such as Parma, Modena, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara. We are not car drivers, so will need to rely on public transport, hence the need for a city location with good transport links. We shall not be sorry to leave the cold wet weather in Glasgow, much as we have enjoyed living here. Italy, here we come!

You also may want to consider the very last part of lombardy accross the PO around Mantova a fantastic city reputed with some of the finest cuisine in the country quiet beautiful good services...

HI Manette, I live in Glasgow too!
Thinking about leaving?
The weather in the region of Italy where you would like to go to will remind you of glasgow in the winter... it gets even colder. But the summer is so beautiful there. Amazing.

I come from Piemonte , a bit more up north.

How is your Italian? There is an italian Group at Glasgow University, we sometimes get together to watch italian movies and have a chat.

Why don't you send me your email address in the private messages, I will add you to the mailing list, I think we will start again in September!

Emilia Romagna? Excellent choice of place to live. We have a house very near Villa Minozzo and yes, winters are cold and lots of snow in the appenines but the summers make up for it and the food...........! How about checking out Castelnouvo nel Monti? It's quite a large town with schools, hospital, plenty of shops etc. or maybe Reggio where there is a train station for access to all the larger cities i.e Bologna, Parma, Modena, Milan. Wherever you decide you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

Welcome to sunny Italy...and I hope I can help you by answering some of your questions...I love Bologna too.
Glasgow is on my mind today since dear friends are desperately searching for accomodations for their univ. age son who is going to your city on an Erasmus program...and they dont know a soul in the city. Seems like the Univ. leaves it all up to them. Since I just found lodgings for my daughter in the univ. city of Bologna I understand their plight. Perhaps you have some contacts they can use? Thanks,

Hi Manette,

Lucky you! I just moved back to Scotland (Edinburgh) from Wales ... and don't we always complain about the weather??

I wish you good luck in your search for a nice retirement home! Snowy winters do have a certain appeal (rather snowy than wet methinks!) too, so I wouldn't be too worried.

We're hopefully following in your footsteps (so to speak!) in a couple of years' time... but we have yet to find 'our' corner in Italy!

Hi Etruria,

Having worked as an International Accommodation Officer, I believe that on campus accommodation is being arranged by the university direct, subject to a students application for accommodation being received on time! Has your son submitted such an application?

However, many exchange students prefer to live off campus in the so-called 'private sector' and the Uni's accommodation dept should give you lists of private contacts, with details about the rooms & houses available. Then unfortunately it is up to you to go and have a look at places, as everyone has different ideas of an 'ideal home' !

I would contact them direct and ask for such information and also if they hold an Open Day just prior to start of term. Then you could arrange to view several places & pick the nicest!!! :)

Good luck!

Stephanie
