1039 Isole Tremiti

It's an archipelago in Puglia, Adriatic sea, in front of Gargano.
3 small islands:
San Domino, all covered by pines, with wonderful beaches, cliffs, clear water, a paradise for diving
San Nicola, the historical one, with the old town, the cathedral, no trees only white stone houses
Capraia - number 3 - is inhabitated, no trees, only rocks
I suggest a trip in September or June, less people, but still good sea

I've been there several times when I was younger and the archipelago hadn't been discovered by tourists yet.
It was a real dream: only fishermen's houses, silence... like all places that have become "touristic" it has lost part of its magic, but is still a great place to go.

I still remember two peculiar moments:
one is il pianto delle diomedee. Diomedee is a kind of seagull that ve there and when those birds come back from the sea to the cliff, in the evening, their sound is just like a baby's cry (cry = pianto)
a second moment is about San Nicola where, some years ago, there was still the old prison where, during the fascismo, people opposing the regime were forced to live.... probably this "monument" has been removed now, but when I visited it (still with graffiti made by the prisoners on the walls) it was just like jumping back in the history

You have two possibilities to reach the islands:
A - from Manfredonia, a port south of Gargano. The trip is quite slow, but it's just like a little cruise, because the ship circumnavigate the Gargano peninsula.
B - From Termoli, a port in Molise: surely faster, with "aliscafo"

I just booked a trip tot he amalfi coast - can anyone give me advice about Positano, Naples and Capri?

You can also reach these easily from Vieste - we can recommend a trip to Gargano - its our favourite place, but difficult to reach. We stayed for a number of years at a wonderfully situated campsite at St Felice, scenery to be believed. However, its got a lot more touristy since we have been going (25 years!). We are now buying near Ostuni as Gargano is just so difficult to reach and the best (in our opinion) beaches are all private. My husband has been diving on he Tremeti islands a couple of times, but I must admit I have stayed behind on the beach and enjoyed the peace!

We have just completed on a trullo near you and are aiming to come over for a couple of weeks in September. Would love to meet up. Will send you a private message.

thanks for all the info....it sounds like a great trip..have now found it on our NEW map ( lost old one !!) and it is quite a way from us...but still sounds worth it.

The termiti isalnds are amazing.
I went there when I was a little kid with my Mum and Dad, then, of course forgot all about it. When I was about 20 I went back with friends. We went into a church where in a glass coffin lies the scheleton of a Saint ( I cannot remember which one, but its a woman). I am veeeeeeeery squemish, and when I saw it I remebered having seen it before but I couldn't understand why. i called my mum and she explained that I was only four when we visited the church and i had escaped from her and wandered around the church and bumped into the skeleton: she told me that I couldn't sleep for several nights after that!!!

So mind the skeleton!!!

Heaven on Earth from Positano to Amalfi and up to Ravello is stunning!

Very very busy at the height of the season and in fact busy all the time as so many people have now discovered the coast. Hope your visit is outside the peak season for your enjoyment.

Have been visiting the area for 35 years and family owned property in the area for awhile...so speaking from personal experience.
