I like your reply! That put me in my place nicely - and you are absolutely right in what you say. We are actually going to travel around for 6 months to make sure we like it enough tomove out and also to see how our language comes on in that time.
We would certainly not go without enough money to support us and to come back if we were struggling or unhappy. Maybe the other night I posted that thread when I was really tired and fed up!
Thanks for waking me up.
Will say hello to Beckfield Lane & Rowntrees for you!
You'll love it here.

Thanks for the waves, many happy years in both places. Italy is lovely, as are most Italians enjoy your touring, I hope you find work, but, you'll be spoiled for choice over where you like best I suspect. :)

Where abouts in Marche are you?

Hi Zillah,
When I first arrived in Abruzzo and was looking around for gainful employment, I noted that there were two English language schools in the nearby town of Sulmona. So off I went cold calling. I met the first owner/manager and explained who I was and asked if there might be any work going. She was really very helpful but pointed out that since I didn't have a TEFL or CELTA qualification anyone else who came along (having said quals) would take precedence. She also told me that the going rate was E13/hour and that if the demand was there in the future she would contact me.
Fair enough. And so I went along to the second school. The owner there said "would you like to buy a language school?" Ah, business not so good then? It transpired that in this case the owners had been running the school for ten years and had been experiencing ever decreasing student numbers.
Subsequently, a friend of mine who came out here, all ready with a TEFL qualification under her belt, got a job with the first school I mentioned immediately.
I am now doing all sorts of things but most recently I've started receiving requests to do technical translations from Italian to English. It all takes place on-line and should hopefully become a nice little earner. Do you have any specialist knowledge that an Italian company would like to take advantage of as regards translations. Worth a thought?
Regards, Clive.

I am hidden just under macerata, if you look at the Italy map on the mags. home page, half way between the Y of Italy and the M of macerata :)

Eye thang ewe.
You're none too far away from us, in fact we pass by Macerata relatively often in our drives around. We're a tad to the east of Teramo.

If you ever go into Macerata, I am sure you will be impressed by it's car parking "system"...

Interesting reading, i have spoken to many people about the teaching and it certainly seems to be that the Trinity TEFL course and teh CELTA seem to be the ones to get.
Are you anything to do with the property website that you listed below your response?

Hi Zillah,
Yes, I'm everything to do with the estate agency listed but that's probably about all the forum moderators would like me to say about it!
How is your job search going?
Have you had any new ideas?
I remember reading on 'Informer' once about an English chap, a cook I think, who managed to impress his subsequent Italian employers by offering to work for them free of charge for two weeks. After the first week he was offered the job!
What experience do you have that you could offer free of charge for a limited period to an Italian enterprise?
Ciao for now....... :)

I am sure I don't know how to use this reply thing correctly! What do you click on for quick reply? I have tried two or three times to post a reply toyour last entry without success - so I will try again!
Firstly an interesting site of yours - on our tours round Italy maybe I can contact you and we can come and have a look. We went to Abruzzo about 2 years ago for 2 or 3 days but unfortunately we were both exhausted and really did not make the most of it.
Ideas permanently go through our heads, first of all we are going to have 6 months to rest up and think clearly and hopefully improve our language in leaps & bounds - we really do enjoy the language. My husband is a surveyor but has had enough over here - used to sell houses before he qualified. Very practical capable man.
My experience has been in arranging events at the college from large dinners to letting all the facilities, arranging events of any type and also being the front person on the PR side many times. My main love has always been horses, now sadly without but have worked with them, bred them, trained them etc, now I concentrate more on dogs as the time element is easier and cheaper!
OK I have to cut this short so I am going to attempt to post it - keepyour fingers crossed!

Thanks George, as you can tell it worked - very patient explanation. Thank you
Zillah, you are the one who is going to be doing it, what do you think ? I once read somewhere that when you get up in the morning, you think either "I am going to do that", or, "I can't do that" and you will probably be right.
you must remember that their is a lot of competition in the unskilled jobs from people willing to work for low wages, so the fruit picking may be out, there will be room for language teachers, BUT, choose your location carefully, and search the threads on this site for some of the pitfalls. If going into tourism, you will need probably one other language.
Remember also to allow a fairly large sum of money to cover your living costs while you become established.
Good luck, whatever you decide
Ohh, wave to Beckfield Lane for me, and Rowntrees (or whatever they're calling themselves now) :)
