1084 Does anybody know SONIA BECKFORD??

Hi ,My name is Jane and I have just discovered this great site .This is a long shot ,but I am searching very hard for my friend Sonia Beckford who was an au pair with me in Rome from 1990 onwards.I came back to England in 1992 and sadly ,because I moved around a bit ,lost touch with Sonia.I know that she had a son Matteo in 1995 and that she was originally from the Manningham area of Bradford.I would love to find Sonia again ,and catch up again after all this time .We were best friends and really looked after each other while we were in Rome and I feel so sad that I may have lost Sonia forever.I have gone to extraordinary lenghs to find her ,even writing and emailing all the sonia beckfords on the internet in the vain hope that one of them was her ,but sadly no luck !!!(although the post mistress thought it quite amusing!!!)
I am ,coincidently ,returning to Rome this month(13 days to go!!!) for a holiday which is a very special treat for my 40th birthday.I am so excited about returning to what I consider the most beautiful place on earth ,and where I had such a wonderfu time .
If ,by any chance ,anyone here knows Sonia ,please could you let me know .Thank you very much ,and thanks for having such a lovely site devoted to a place which is so dear to my heart .With love and thanks ,Jane x x

Enjoy your special trip to Roma and welcome to the forum

Hi David and Linda ,Thank you very much ,I'll try friends reunited.
I used to live in Italy ,working as an au pair , and kept a journal all the time I was there .Ive just been re reading it and it has made me want to go back even more!! .Its strange isnt it ,that when you are living abroad ,everything that happens to you seems to become very significant. When I took my first flight to Rome in october 1990 (to become an au pair) ,I noticd an empty seat near the window .I looked around and eventually ,as nobody was occupying it ,I decided to discreetly move ,so that I could get a good view out of the window.Shortly before take off ,a woman appeared in the isle ,looking all flustered and glancing from her boarding pass to the rows of seats .I had an uncomfortable feeling :o (!) and was greeted with the words "excuse me but I think your sitting in my seat ".I hurriedly apologised and moved .We struck up a conversation which lasted all the way from Heathrow to Rome .As we hovered above the twinkling lights of Rome ,Dorie turned to me and whispered "Well ,heres your new home!!".I cant explain the feeling I had ,wonderous excitement ,joy and anticipation of something quite wonderful ahead .Dorie and I became firm friends and following my arrival in Rome ,and my subsequent need some weeks later to "escape" from the family I was working for(!!) Dorie shared her apartment with me ,helped me out with money and was there for me in the most wonderfully supportive way you could ever imagine .I often think that if I had stayed in my own seat on the plane ,i would probaly never have met Dorie ,and my time in Rome would have been so different.Has anybody else ever had these kind of experiences?.I cant imagine my life changing in quite the same way during the daily routine of my life here.By the way ,Im really enjoying the boards .Its lovely to immerse myself in an environment where everybod shares the same passion for Italy .I think the folks at work will be relieved when I eventually go on my trip next week!!! .Peace and quiet at last ,and a welcome break from my incessant italian :) ramblings!!!!! love to everyone ,Jane x x
