1120 pregnancy and hospitals in italy

We have just discovered that I'm pregnant and are in complete shock as we had (we thought) completed our family ( 4 young children) and were heading in other directions. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has experience of hospitals in Italy ( we are under Macerata). Despite having had four I have a phobia of hospitals in general and if in England would try for a home birth again...but I guess not here....feeling petrified

I know it is diffucult to face hospitals in a different country. I live in Glasgow and everytime I have to go to the hospital... well... and I about to get mariied, and, if everything goes well, we will soon be having a baby so... I will be petrified!

But my experience of hospitals in Italy is good. I immagine you would have a gp, just go to him and he will direct you to the right hospital etc, so that you can have the proper care before the birth. You can have a home birth in Iatly as well, just talk it through with your gp, dottore della mutua, usually you need an ostetrica privata....
that is very brave of you!! I would never have the courage .....

Thank you for the quick reply and reassuring that there may be an option with a private ob....just such as shock as we are in the midst of house negotiations and yes we have been irresponsible but these things happen..now I'll just have to work up the courage to visit GP and good luck with your pregnancy

It doesn't need courage to visit a doctor over here, just knock on their door, and above all, remember most Italians ADORE children, I am certain you will not have any problems, good luck.

There has been a previous article in Italymag concerning health care and hospitals. Can't remember the full details, but it was clear that if you have to spend time in hospital you will be in excellent hands. Think they mentioned healthcare was probably the best in the EU.

Maybe of some comfort??

The hospitals here are fine.
I had one in Jesi and 2 at San Severino Marche - San Severino Marche is a great hospital because they leave you alone.

Hi Lilly,
auguri for your pregnancy
I too live under Macerata (Porto Recanati) and two kinds of mine were born in Macerata hospital.
It's a good hospital, with competent doctors and care.
We had no problems.
My wife doctor is Mario Farotti, a very good one.

Thanks for the replies. We are trying for a home birth but didn't receive much support at the first ob visit. I am trying to find out if there is an organisation here similar to NCT to support me. San Severino sounds of interest as does Macerata , I will visit both...but it's not so much the quality of the medical care that worries me, I would like minimal intervention...
