1173 Website Redesign: opinions and a voting request

The Italy Magazine website has gone through a bit of an overhaul. With some trepidation we would like to know what you think of the new design.

The aim is to make navigation easier and simpler to follow up new stories. Now summaries of all stories from all regional sites will be posted on the frontpage with a link taking you to the regional site. So a look on the front page will give you a better overview of what is going on throughout all the sites and making it easier to follow stories.

A feature that is coming up shortly are how-to guides based on discussions in our forums (e.g. how to find a DIY store, how to annoy other forum members ;), etc). In order to discover those great threads that merit to be scrutinised and their multiple pearls of wisdom refined into a how-to-guide it would be great if you could use the rate this thread function which you can find towards the right hand side. Lots of stars means a great thread...

All the best,

Ronald

Very crisp, and, it seems to load faster too, well done, nice... :)

Hi Ronald,
well I shall set the ball rolling so to speak, by saying that when I initially clicked on the site, I thought this looks different!! I have found it easier to see all the links displayed across the top of the homepage. I also think that all sites need an overhaul every now and again :p
So you have the thumbs up from me.
Kind regards
Frances

I prefer this new setup - new browser windows everytime you select an option got a bit annoying - this works better - and yes, it does seem to load up faster - a huge bonus!

I think the redesign is easier to use, and looks crisp.

Bravo, Ronald, great job. It's looking very good and is fast becoming an authoritative and entertaining resource 'for lovers of all things Italian'. Keep up the good work.

Marc

Apart from thinking at first that I clicked on the wrong 'favourite' site, I found it very easy to use. All links are clearly defined in obvious places.

And, yes, it loaded much quicker too...

Well done! :)

I like it too, but I found what I assume is a typo - that is unless you've found an eccentric way of saying that the busker fest will be a bummer. :-)

Looks great. Very modern and of the moment.

Well done, Ronald!

Russ

thanks to everyone for the kind messages - hope the site will continue to grow with your help.

George I wouldn't dare to have anyone but you write the forum etiquette guide ;)

a presto,

ronald

:) really good Ronald...no wonder you didn't have time to tell George off !!! ;)

The Italian Lessons are brilliant and so easy to get back to main sites... :)

Just one thing - is the data backed up regularly - I am on another forum that crashed one day - and lost 3 years worth of useful data!

I agree with everyone else. The navigation is a lot better. Good on yer Ronald!

Well done Ronald... the design and functionality are great. Just one point about the content though; I feel the magazine itself has been pushed into a tight corner by the amount of space dedicated to news feeds. (Maybe the idea is to draw in more revenue through Google ads?) With so much original and stimulating content in the magazine and Forum, its a shame to give such prominence to RSS news feeds, and you could be driving first-time visitors away, if they look at it and think that its just another news aggregator.
Thanks for soliciting feedback; its a brave webmaster who opens his work up to critical scrutiny from us lot!

will - at one point the design was just as you suggested (guardian - style). In the end I decided against it but who knows - it may very well return!

marc - you make a very good point. The goal is to generate more content "in-house" rather than rely just on news. I think that there is space for both. The daily news provide a staple of content that I hope is always useful for people. In the next few months however you will start seeing much more "original" content deriving both from the forum and from several other sources.

thanks once more for all your comments.
