Just fround out from the manager of the Florence store that Ikea will be opening in Ancona in April. Hooray!

:D I will be able to buy the print of the three pebbles now Joy, ohh joy, and I have several months to prepare a suitable spot to hang it...

No, seriously, great news, hope they manage to control the crowds on the opening night though, I will probably give it a week or so, let the excitement settle a bit.

But put bluntly, Ikea wouldn't be opening a store if they didn't know there was a demand for it. Whatever the nostalgia, Italians and ex-pats will still go to Ikea.

George,

I have a better picture than the peble one that I bought from Ikea and it shows 4 Greacian looking naked ladies all showing their ample bottoms  . My 4 kids laughed their heads off when I put it up and thought it was very rude.

As for crowds, was it Germany recently where they had to call in the riot cops when one store opened and didn't somebody get shot.................

Paula

It has to be the Pebbles, sorry, nothing else will do, sorry, I know the world is divided over this point, i am proud to be a lover of the Pebble Print Person..
They seem to have a problem with store openings although I sometimes think the publicity is worth it to them... I didn't know about Germany, I was thinking about the dear young shell suit clad lady( it WAS purple, with matching Baseball cap) who'd travelled by bus and train with her dear old mum to the store in the south of England last winter and walked into a riot, I have often wondered if they got back safely. Ohhhh, perhaps the forum members could help me find her... Ahhh, but, she might not be "into" pebbles

I think it was Edmonton, North London. Midnight opening. I remember reading about it in the news and wondering whether the world had gone mad....

Ireland's first Ikea will be opening soon in North Dublin. I think the riot police have started training for this already! :)

Derek

I think that was the one, also, I think that was the first time I saw very bad mobile phone video which didn't actually show anything being used by the news station.

Has ikea opened a store in le marche or does anyone know if they are truly about to?
We are about to furnish house on tight budget-I haven"t looked too closely but the local furniture stores don"t seem too cheap or inspiring

When we eventually found how to ge to the Ikea in Bologna I found it almost empty??? There are things from Ikea we need - bathroom fittings, and rugs and bits - and three pebbles picture... Though I shall still buy my beds from the lady in the shop in Communanza who will deliver for free.... |Use local when you can. Janet

Ikea is opening in Ancona in mid Spring 2006. As a matter of fact they are already distributing their famous catalogues to all households free of charge. The new store will include a restaurant.

That was what the first post said
they always distribute free
They always have a restaurant (how else would they sell you the meatballs)

Of course!!! Just wanted to point out that IKEA is opening a new store in Ancona in reply to

Cheers

I don't care where they open their shops. I have had done my time through four children with flat pack galore (no Saturday afternoon is complete without it?). I want proper (old) Italian furniture in my house. When (not quite) in Rome, do as (you think the Romans ought to) do!

So where are the antique/junk shops in Pescara province?
When (not quite) in Rome, do as (you think the Romans ought to) do!
Hmm well, having just been to the Ikea on Via Anagnina, I think I can confirm that all the Romans appear to be shopping and eating at Ikea, and even running their businesses from the cafe using a mobile phone and a laptop computer with GPRS.

Please, don't tell me, it's next to the Walmart. Ikea or any other store that take more space than a matchbox give me a stomach ache in my head. There are still a few Pop and Mom's hardware stores, even in the US metropolitan DC area where you can get everything for a few pennies more plus an excellent service and a sound advice.

the store will be opening end of september i think we went there last week store in le marche http://www.click-finance-uk.co.uk/homeinsurance.html

Don't know the official opening date, however, they did originally plan to open one just down from Gradara and then changed their minds.
Got a lucky escape there I reckon.

I've been to IKEA here for quite a few things as I'm not generally impressed with cheap Italian furniture and anything I do fancy (some lovely wood furniture in this area) is way out of my pocket. The junk shops contain just that.

A word of warning is to ignore the stock levels given online. Most of the things I needed were out-of-stock according to the website, but everything bar one cabinet door was available when I actually visited. I'm sure the reverse is actually true as well!

If you like Ikea then try www.semeraro.it

Better quality and more choice!!

I give you all fair warning that I will be entering the "Ikea Zone" Rome next Tuesday.

I'm a woman on a mission to fill the hired Fiat Ullysis with everything including the kitchen sink!! As I will be flying solo if any one comes across a pathetic red head on that appalling ring road dodging the traffic please stop and help me secure the mattresses to the roof bars so that my poor children have somewhere to sleep!!

I agree many of us have moved on from Ikea but also agree that at least you know prices etc and can budget before you buy. When we have tried to buy furniture locally it has either been beautiful but very expensive or cheap and very nasty!

So for now Ikea fills the gap!

Jackie

Ikea also give you the pack sizes on their site, so you can work out if it will all fit into the back of your Panda/Fiesta/other small car! Last time I went I did a shop, packed the car and then went back for another unit or two.

All I need now is somebody to help me put up the wall units on less than level walls with less than square corners... The spirit level nearly went out the window, but luckily I remembered I no longer have an garden and now live on the fourth floor.
....please stop and help me secure the mattresses to the roof bars so that my poor children have somewhere to sleep!! Jackie
Try their rolled up 'foam' mattresses - 5 yr guarantee - they fit inside the car.. They are packaged and the air 'sucked out' so double mattress is in a tube about 4'6" long by 15" diameter - [that'll confuse the 'non-imperialists' amongst you]

Thanks Alan that sounds marvelous - don't suppose you know the Ikea name for it do you?

I just read this on the IKEA website today, under store openings "Ancona, Italy - July " not sure how accurate this is,but that is what they have posted.

hope it is not april 2007...... we are counting onit being august 2006 Janet

According to the IKEA corporate website the new store is opening in Ancona in July 2006.

URL is as follows:

http://www.ikea-group.ikea.com/corporate/about_ikea/ikea_group_stores.html

We may well be paying a visit assuming our purcchase is complete by then!

went to Bologna and they said the Ancona Ikea was due to open in August!! more delays but the man said you know builders....

Can anyone give me directions to Ikea Bologna, driving down to Marche in August with furniture so may stop off en route!

Its in the paper - due to open August 31st - not sure where but probably on Acona Sud exit....

That's a pain ..... I was hoping July as scheduled given I'm going out then!!! I wish they would open one in Pescara or Chieti .....

Cannot alas give you an update on Bari but the Ancona store is opening in August. Keep an eye on this link whic I posted a couple of pages ago. http://www.ikea.com/ms/it_IT/local_home/local_ancona.html!!!

standard pay for shop sales / assistant tends to be 8 - 9 euros an hour. in Italy is is also common to get a 13 month pay and even better companies give you a 14 month. so when you add all things over a period of a year the wages are just slightly lower than the UK. But you cannot compare the UK to Italy as the lifestyle is so much better here even if you get paid less.

FYI the Ancona shop is right by the Ancona Sud A14 exit.Over the bridge and you can't miss it
Can anyone confirm if the Ancona IKEA has opened yet?
The official date, according to the website is now September 28th at 9am! A bit later than the originally publicised Spring time opening, obviously a few delays have been encountered along the way.

I know that Sales Assitants in Marks and Spencers are paid £5 an hour. In Pret A Manger, £6 So comparable then but of course the cost of living is higher.
Just fround out from the manager of the Florence store that Ikea will be opening in Ancona in April. Hooray!
It is now listed on their website, official opening of the new Ancona store is set for Sept 28th 2006. Open 7 days a week. Bet it will be manic for the first week or two...fraid to say we will be there first week of October...

For Bari the opening is scheduled for February 2007 - http://www.ikea-group.ikea.com/corporate/about_ikea/ikea_group_stores.html

Oh yipeee!!! That's really a big incentive!!! Actually I passd the store today on my way to Ancona Airport by train!!!

When they opened the new store in North London a year a two ago at midnight, they had huge discounts on settees. The store if I remember right had to close because of the crowds!!!

Just for info it is near ancona sud - you can see the building and the sign from the tolls, its near to the toy store.

Have also heard 31st august, the day I have to fly to the uk, so will have to wait for my next trip back!

And now http://www.ikea.com/ms/it_IT/local_home/local_ancona.html!!! Enjoy!!!

I understand that a Store Salesperson at Ikea - earns €800 a month - in Italy. I guess that doesnt compete with the UK.

I would imagine Glen it is comparable to the UK given food and rent is cheaper in Italy.

Does anybody know when Ikea will be opening in Bari? I can only manage to find out "autumn" which is vague and even vaguer in the south of Italy...! i can't face the drive to Naples from Lecce! Or would Ancona be nearer?

This link says August but sounds as though they have had delays if your info says Autumn.

Good news .... we are in Amandola end of aug begining of sept with a van! I can see a trip to Ikea on the cards but certainly not for opening day! Mind you maybe people won't riot in Ancona trying to get in as they did when the last new one opened near London last year!!

Will certainly want to pick up one or two bits .... fingers crossed rogito day is now less than a week away and hoping everything goes smoothly. Just hope the figures on the costometer stop rotating!
