1165 Skiing already?

Earlier this year we spent a few days in the Alto Sangro area ( Roccaraso / Aremogna). There was plenty of ski-ing, not as much as some of the Dolomite or Alpine resorts, but certainly plenty to keep you going and more than sufficient for a good days ski-ing. The pistes were well maintained and the queues for the lifts not too bad even over the Easter weekend. Various types of lift passes were available, each covering different or sometimes overlapping areas, but beware once on the slopes it was not easy to know whether you were still in an area covered by the pass or not. The piste maps also did not differentiate the various zones. If you skied out of area it was easy enough to buy an extension at the nearest pass office so was more of a frustration than a real problem. Car parking was readily available at the foot of all the main lifts, I cannot remember the cost but it was not astronomical for the day. Ski school was available (not sure about English speaking instructors though) and all children have to wear helmets. As far as the slopes themselves go, something for everyone; there were some good longer ones as well as some little shorties, I don't think any of the blacks were white knuckle stuff, but this can obviously vary with the conditions.

The season just gone was exceptional esp. for more Southerly resorts, there was not a huge snowfall like the previous year but it was consistently cold and the snow lasted, let's hope for another one like that rather than the usual snow slush snow situation.

We're flying to Rome on 23 December and thought to go ski-ing in the Abetone from about 26 or 27 December to 1st or 2nd January. However, having spoken to quite a few hotels (smaller ones - can't afford the 4star jobs!) they seem to be prebooked with the same clients each year. I hadn't thought about Abruzzo until reading your thread. Has anyone ever ski-ed there at that time of year? Any recommendations welcome.

I was at the ski slopes of Abruzzo late March and there were people still skiing. St Leonardos [I think]pass was the place I was going to.
