Paola, I'm sure you already know this, coming from Piemonte and about to marry a Scotsman... :) .. but I found out recently that there's a village in Piemonte, in the hills to the West of Cannobio on Lake Maggiore, whose inhabitants are all descended from Scots. Apparently, they even go so far as to wear kilts during festivals etc, and there's a 'Ristorante Scozia' on the main square. I can't remember the name of the place, but I can dig it out if you're interested. I was intrigued, anyway.

How hard is it to find lard, Mars bars and deep-frozen pizza in Italy?
The ingredients for mutton pies and haggis are wandering around outside our house in Abruzzo at the moment.
Mars Bars?

Hard enough, I'd say, to find deep-fried battered Mars Bars....! And I'll bet they don't serve Irn Bru at the bar!
As for the Haggis', they can stay in Abruzzo!! Yuk!

Well if you ever change your mind, the village is called Gurro, in the Cannobina Valley. According to my book... "After the battle of Pavia in 1525, a company of Scottish mercenaries fighting on the side of the French (!!!) fled to this remote valley where they settled as mountain farmers and married local women. Even today, the local dialect contains elements of Gaelic and kilts are worn at festivals."

I have sent you a private message re. Liguria
A quick hello from me, a Scotsman living in Ireland who's thinking about maybe researching the possibility of maybe buying a holiday home in Northern Italy. The lakes area..... maybe!!
Seriously, I'm in the 'finding out' stage and this forum looks just the place for a few questions! Talk to some of you soon.
Derek
PS. After reading 'Ciao from Dublin' I hope the fact that I'm iving in Ireland won't trigger a Ryanair discussion!! :)
