The Post Office offers house insurance that covers you for earthquake damage - not many, if any other companies do as in the past if your house was damaged due to an earthquake you could claim a grant from the government for repairs. There are rumours that this will change. To take out insurance with the PO you have to have a bank account with them. Cannot remember the costs, but I don't think they were too bad.

I pay only 35 euros per year for house insurance.
When we had earthquakes in 97 part of our house (not the house Im in now) was "destroyed" .. big crack in one wall and we had to get a series of work done.
The italian state paid about 85,000 Euros for all of this work.
We didnt have any insurance on that house - we never even asked for state money. The town just came and told us our house was damaged and 3 years later gave us a bunch of money to fix it.
strange but true.

We got up this morning to see the sky filled with smoke as a fire is burning up the nearby Malibu mountians. This got me to thinking about fire insurance. In Southern California you have to buy fire insurance (in some cases) when you purchase your home. Earthquake insurance is optional, but fire insurance can be mandatory.
Can someone let us know about fire insurance in Italy?
Thanks,
John & Dee

I tried to get our house insured at the Post Office, but was told that my A.I.R.E residency needs changing to full residency before I would be able to take out any insurance.
I can’t believe that only an Italian Resident can take out house insurance.

I just recieved a letter today concerning reduction of Tarsu with AIRE residency. Have also already gotten my ENL charges reduced. I would ask to see the document(s) that led them to this conclusion. The Italian government is really pushing to have their overseas citizens enrolled in AIRE and the beurocrats in Rome would likely look kindly upon your request for a ruling or re-interpretation of this issue. If they provide the written documentation, please post on this board. Grazie!

We have insured our villino near Rome with Milano Assicurazioni for four years and this covered earthquakes and periods of unoccupancy but we have now discovered Schofields, based in the UK and specialize in holiday home insurance in Italy. We are thinking of moving to them - has anyone had any experience of insuring with them?
Having recently bought a house in Italy I am wondering about insurance.
We're in an earthquake zone - is it possible to insure against earthquake damage?
In the UK we pay about £30 per month for buildings and contents insurance, thus protecting ourselves against fire, theft and accidental damage.
Do similar house insurance products exist in Italy?
We used Robertson-McIsaac Insurance Brokers, +44 (0)191 212 1234, www.rmib.co.uk. Speak to Tony Rynn - tony.rynn@rmib.co.uk. They are not the cheapest, but I found them more flexible than others that I tried and they were able to offer earthquake protection which many others would not. We are renovating at the moment, but providing the property is secure they are supplying cover. We'll be adding to the contents protection, pro rata, when the builders have gone.

We checked out some of the UK companies for buildings, contents and public liability (because we are renting out) and the best quote we could get was £275. We just got back from Italy and sorted out the same cover with a company there for 180 euro. This is for 120k rebuilding, 20k contents and 500k public liability.
We insure house and contents through RAS Insurance - office in Communanza - I don't know if they are nationwide or local to the Southern Marche
