Have you thought of taking it yourself? We hired a van and took our flat pack furniture down to Abruzzo. - Making it took longer than the journey though!!!

We hired a Mercedes Sprinter (long wheel base) - can Highly recomment them over Luton's as they can travel at a good pace (what out for the French cop's!).
With good stacking, you can fit a lot of stuff in them (1600kg!)

We were quoted £2400 + vat for a Transit sized removal van to take our stuff from Bedfordshire to Puglia. We also looked into hiring a self drive van but this too was very expensive ( £600 - £800). So we bought a LWB high top Transit on ebay for £1250, did the Italy trip, kept the van for about 6 months and resold it on ebay for £1000. It's amazing how much stuff you can fit into one of those things.
On the down side though it was very expensive getting there and back.
Ferry - £120.
Road Tolls - £250 (estimate)
Monte Blanc tolls - £50
overnight stops - £250
Diesel - £300

If you only want to take a relatively small amount of furniture it will be cheaper to buy it in Italy if you can find what you want.

We used Eurovan@man to transport furniture from Bucks to Ostuni in October 05 and everything arrived safely and on time. I understand it was the first time he had been that far south, so we would certainly recommend him.

I hired a LWB transit from Hertz on a Friday morning, drove it home and with the help of a friend packed the van (finally got three pots of bamboo in). Made the 2.00pm ferry. I took it in turns with with my friend to drive non-stop through France, using the motorways and apart from the odd toilet and coffee stop we where in the local bar in Vigolo Marchese, Piacenza on Saturday morning. We unloaded the van and meet up with some friends for dinner. On Sunday after lunch we started the trip back. The worst part of the journey was returning the van in rush hour on the Monday afternoon. The outward journey took 13 hours from Calais and the return took 12 hours!
