1097 Cleaning water tanks

We have a water tank which I guess has not been refilled for some years. We are getting it replenished, does anyone have any advice about adding anything to the tank to help keep the water clean? Also any advice about approx cost of a tanker of water in Puglia. Thanks in advance..

We've been told that 10,000 lts of water from the tanker is about 20 euro. We only completed at the end of June and the guy we bought ours off still has the olive grove next to our property but is continuing to water the fruit trees in our garden and fill up the water tank. Neal was with him yesterday and offered him money but wouldn't take it so we havn't filled it up ourselves yet but thats what we were told. As soon as we relocate though we're definitely going to have the well dug so as to have free continuous water.

Hi Christine, Did you ever find out what you should do with a cistern, it would be helpful for us too?

In England it would be normal to use Milton to sterilise water tanks and pipes. This is bought either in bottles or tablets. It is the same product which is used for sterilising babies bottles.

Of course if you are importing water that might complicate matters. Following the instructions on the packet, You could scrub out your tank with a milton solution and then run out the water with all taps open (this helps to scour the pipework and tap insides).Or alternatively let a milton solution soak, then scrub and run out. Afterwards you would need to do a bit of washing out before refilling with your water supply. Although a tiny bit of milton in your water does no harm.

If you have a clean tank and standing water in England it would be normal to have a UV water treatment lamp on the incoming water supply. If the water has sediment in it a pre-filter would be expected too. None of this equipment is very expensive and is available in Italy as well as England.

It was more about keeping the water clean rather than cleaning the tank for an under ground water cistern that collects rain water 7000 litres?

Fit filtration and uv sterilisation as it enters the house.

We were advised locally to place an eel in the water to keep it clean. We didn't, but so far the water seems to be reasonably clean.

hi, a heel is what our ancestors use to put in cisternas to keep it clear and clean.
Amuchina is just as good as the Milton product to disinfect water.
On your first post you talked about a tank and not a cisterna(well), if it's a tank make sure it's not made with eternit (outlaw now because it contains asbestos).
In ostuni where I live, transported drinking water is 20€per 40 q.li tanker
