Street cleaners in Torre del Greco, near Naples, are suing their Council because they had to wash their work clothes at home for ten years.
The street cleaners’ lawyer has said that machine-washing the clothes at home after each shift had cost the 17 workers around 500 euros a year each and a total of 5,500 euros each for the entire period. The lawyer is hopeful as in 1997 Italy’s Cassazione [Supreme Court] ruled in favour of the workers in a similar case.
In 2009 the Council of Torre del Greco finally agreed to pay to have the clothes washed.
