The Civil Protection Department has extended by another 24-36 hours its severe weather alert for northern Europe because of continuing heavy snow.
The snow has caused problems on motorways and outside urban areas like Milan, where returning commuters can expect poor road conditions.
Milan's Linate and Malpensa airport are open but the snow has caused significant delays and some flight cancellations are expected.
