11180 abruzzo elections almost over

its actually making all the national headlines... not that many people are interested in abruzzo because its one of the smaller regions with only about 1.2 million population... but because this is the first test of how the present government and the opposition are doing... basically a straight fight between berlusconi and veltroni and their candidates....

whatever side of the fence you take i believe a victory for the ex mayor of Teramo will be of benefit to the region as a whole... he has done whilst in office here a good job of improving facilities in both the provincial sense and in the town... and is young and progressive...

however yesterday voting was way down on the 2005 regional election numbers... and cannot blame the weather as it was sunny and warm here... there is voting today until 15.00 so should know the result by the evening... no doubt there will be a lot of national debate on the results and what it says about the main national parties....

chiodi won.... so now things should settle down here a bit... an election called because the regional president was arrested for corruption.... but maybe there is worse to come as the mayor of pescara has also now found himself arrested for corruption...in fact he was supposed to be running as the left candidate for the regional presidency.... i guess as he was under investigation at the time Veltroni decided not to run him... however the official news came out after voting had finished...basically it would have seen even a further reduction in the vote for the lefts candidate... as now abruzzo has to come to terms with further scandal...

It looks as if 52% of registered voters decided not to bother.....

By UK standards - that's an amazingly good turnout!
