There are some great offers at the moment on power tools from screwfix etc so we thought we would buy some for our project.
Does anyone know if we will be ok using the uk tools with an Italian generator? We have no electricity on site and we are aware of the incompatability of high voltage tools and italian electricity supply!

The voltage is standard across the EU now, so that is not an issue. The key figure is the power in Watts (sometimes shown as VA). A powerful SDS drill can be 1200W, which could exceed the capacity of a small generator from either the UK or Italy. (e.g. my UK one is 1.1kW or 1100W).
