I once stayed in a lovely agritourismo, they pointed out the items they'd picked up from the dump and refurbished, the bed was about the only thing they hadn't un dumped... I think your comune could tell you about local dumps, opening times and suchlike... (the phrase in England is skip hopping BTW) ;)

I've never seen a car boot sale as such, but a lot of towns and villages have 'mercatini dei pulci'... flea-markets, usually on the 'n'th Sunday of every month. They tend to sell 'antiques', in the loosest sense of the word.
On the whole, buying things second-hand in Italy is seen as lacking the all-important Bella Figura, hence the absence of charity shops and auction houses. Still, I guess there's always Ebay.

Ebay is the only way if you are selling things - even in the UK the audience is more targeted then it would be at a boot sale.
Never seen one matey, the Italians have a different view of old stuff to the bruts., they tend to just dump it...
