October is transition month, in the middle of autumn. You can get good days and bad ones. the 1st of November, il giorno di ognissanti, is the day where italians of the north visit the cemeteries and start wearing a coat. That means that before that a jumper and a jacket can keep you warm enough.

If you are going to Piemonte (the region where I come from and where I operate) I would suggest you tried to go at the beginning of october. If it is a good year the harvesting of the grapes could still be on and the colours of the landscape are turning to red, it is a magic season, with the mist in the morning..... lovely.

We have a house in Le Marche and have visited in October for the last three years. One year we had beautiful warm sunny weather, the next was fog so thick you could not see more than 6 feet in front of you and last year was beautiful again! Not much help I know.

Unsurprisingly it's the same in Abruzzo. We are always at home in October/November because we need to harvest the olives. This is hard work and the weather never helps. The ground is always soft and muddy underfoot because we will have had lots of rain before and often during the harvest. We wake up at first light and work until dark, and ina day we can see blazing sunshine, heavy mist, rain and very strong winds.

I always remember October as the time the weather changes because years ago we sat in a retaurant on a high hill with a view out to sea. We arrived in full sunshine and as we ate, the weather changed turning into a violent storm with lashing rain. Wonderful to watch from inside a cosy restaurant, not so nice on the autostrada.

All through October these sdden storms seem to rage from across the Adriatic. Their arrival is very quick and it's possible to get flash flooding and land slips at this time of year. It's why I drive a 4x4 in Italy, most days it's not needed, but in from autumn to spring we need a vehicle that can cross raging mud streams and climb steep unmade roads in the rain.
