hello
farindola is a medium-small village (2100 habitant) 50 min drive from pescara located at the edge of the parco nazionale del gran sasso the biggest national park in abruzzo.
This village shape can be identify as typical for this region, with a castle in the highs point of the hill overlooking the valley and the river, the housing have spread in a semicircle round it mainly build with stones from the river bead, the origins of this village are not clear however form a recent roofing stone discovered in the main church they think the village is more than 1000 years old.
The village is particularly quite in winter due to the cold weather, even if not to high about 500m above sea level the surrounding maintains, that in winter are full of snow, have effect on the climate of the area making it sharply cold specially in the jan-feb months even if the temperature rarely reaches the subzero temperatures.
In summer the village get’s more lively due to Sagra del pecorino where the village transforms in to a big open restaurant with long tables spread round the village where you can buy pecorino cheese, arrosticini and pane e olio, talk to local peps and have a nice glass of montepulciano.
Been close to the national park the village gets more visitor coming past and from and to the trip to the park .
The main parts of the habitant do commute for work to the main cities for work (pescara-chieti) and a minority are working on the farms that are spread round the village.
The main attractions is, obviously, the national park that in winter offers skiing, ice climbing and other sports associated with the snow and in summer rock climbing and walking-mountain baking, not to forget that there many lakes round the are and they can be used for perfect family days out. One other main attraction in summer is the seaside that is only 50 min away.
I would suggest that you visit Penne-loreto aprutino and Montebello di bertona not too far form farindola but at the same time beautiful and a little bigger where you might have easier access to shops and accommodations.
Hope this help and good luck in your search
Stefano
