574 Introducing Myself!!!

Hi everyone,

what a delightful forum..had to subscribe!

I am currently planning my escape with my own car from Cardiff to Lecce this summer, and have been very interested in reading about the best routes and all the advice given. However, I can't seem to be able to find the threads relating to the european insurance cover (referred to in some threads..)? could anyone send me a link please?

thank you,
Patrizia

I'm not sure which links you refer to. If you are travelling on a one-off or short term basis, then the easiest thing to do is to get green card cover on your current policy. Simply ring your insurer/broker as appropriate and get them to issue the green card. Make sure you know what is covered though, some insurers only provide minimum cover on a green card, i.e. third party insurance only, you may not even be covered for fire and theft. The fire insurance gets overlooked by many, I've driven for many years in Europe and seeing cars on fire by the side of the road is common across Europe. More common than in the UK. It's a combination of the higher summer temperatures and the long driving distances coupled with the frequent steep ascents of mountains in France, Switzerland and Italy that place a car under considerable stress. The engine may well be working very hard, but airflow under the bonnet can be low because of the low road speeds.

If you intend to travel often, then you may wish to consider a different type of insurance. The one I use is a comprehensive policy that covers breakdown insurance, legal aid, and unlimited driving in Europe, povided that no trip exceeds 60 days. If that suits you then I recommend the brokers Footman James who do the policy for a reasonable price.
