1356 Removals from Berkshire to Puglia

Do you really need to move everything? We have been amased how much we can cut down at present to 3 containters for a bit of storage time - divan beds are not suitable for Italia, crockery and glasses cheap and better. Its only books that appear to take up our weight. We have used a local firm who will bring out our stuff as and when we ask - perhaps if they have another run going south about a time to suit us. Good luck it is quite expensive and you can dispose of lots of stuff! No electrical goods and the like

Can I ask why divan beds are not suitable for Italy?

We may have a rethink when we get the quotes in from the removals company and sell everything here -

We have just recently had a quote and the cost alone from Northern Italy to Naples will be £1800, total cost from Hull to Naples with three storage containers £4450 - as I was a truck driver for over 10 years I will be buying a secondhand 7.5 ton van (you can pick one up for around £1500 - £2000 and are drivable on a car license) and moving our furniture ourselves. Plus we have the added bonus that we will have a truck which we can use to collect large items from diy/builders yards while we renovate.

That shoulds like a good idea. We've been thinking about hiring a truck - not sure how to work out what size we need. License is not a problem as we have an HGV friend who fancies the idea (and a holiday).
We're also considering selling all the furniture etc and buying new in Italy. Not sure what to do yet.

There is no problem using your electrical goods in Italy unless they are from the US. The only difference is that washing machines are cold fill only here and that some older TV's may not work (ours did - 6 years old).

If you are in a financial position to sell all your old stuff (2nd hand furniture usually gets very little in the UK) and buy it all new here in Italy then go for it. The difference in cost for transporting 1/2 our contents and all of our contents was minimal. We had a 45ft container, the goods were professionally packed in the UK and it was delivered to our door in Italy for about 5,000 GBP.

We brought all our beds. Not sure why divan beds would be no good for Italy??

With the electrical goods - did you mean
There is no problem using your electrical goods in Italy unless they are from the US, rather than the UK?

Not being very spatially aware I can't visualise what a 45ft container would hold. Did you transport all your contents in the end? Or half? Without any quotes I have ball park estimated £8000 to move all of our (4 bedroom) house contents. Pickfords and Bishops Move will be quoting over the next couple of weeks, will be interesting to see if I'm anywhere near close!

Be aware that the quote you get may not include delivery to your door if you are moving to a hide-away dwelling, at the end of a long twisting narrow track, which a large truck can not navigate. :eek:

we brought all our Uk electrical goods over. Washing machine, dryer, dish washer, tvs, hi-fi ,computer and uncle tom cobbly and all !!! Also all the 'little bits' hairdryers,food mixers, toaster...you name it we brought it !! In most cases , you just bung an Italian plug on it.
All work fine. Alex has put a post on under another electrical heading about tuning TV and plugs etc if you are interested.

We also brought over all our stone pots and statues from the garden ( I didn't think they would wear that one ...but they did !!!).

There is also another post on the topic of whether to bring or buy new...really depends on your budget and how much work you have to do on the house.
We are so pleased we did bring ours over now as the cost of replacing a lot of it would have been outside our budget once we had done the essentials on the house. i do think it is a personal choice tho' and depends on your circumstances.
Our view was that we were completely relocating and as we were bringing ten ton (exagerration !! :rolleyes: ) of books and stuff we have collected from all over the place after 35 years of marriage we may as well fill the container !!!...
We still got rid of loads of stuff and gave away some really good furniture as it was so hard to sell second hand stuff...and even the local charities messed us around so much, we just gave it away to neighbours in the end.....most of which I now wish we had hung onto. !!! :rolleyes:

Thanks for the update. Our feeling is that we do want to take as much as possible, we're quite attached to most of our household possessions etc. Only eight years of marriage but in that time we have completely rebuilt and refurnished our home together.

I would say ...bring as much as you can...you'd be amazed how much it would mount up if you had to replace everything...nice if you can do it...but also as I have said before on another post...once the van arrives , you have everything here , even if it is to tide you over until you replace certain things and I would have thought with 2 children this would really help. Also it stops you buying in a panic simply because 'you have to get something'.

it is huge. We didn't fill it and we had a large 4 bedroom house, the contents of a 20ft shed (including the actual shed!) and all my husbands car spares. As we only had 6 days between exchange and moving in the UK the packers just packed everything in site.
